There you have it, the new state slogan, announced yesterday by acting governor Codey. According to his announcement, over 11,000 people voted by phone and on the internet, and
"Come See For Yourself" garnered the most votes, with 3,373. not a landslide by any means, but there will not
be a recount as far as I know. (The other finalists were: "New Jersey: Expect the Unexpected," "New
Jersey: Love at First Sight," "New Jersey: The Real Deal" and "New Jersey: The Best Kept
Secret.") The new slogan was submitted by Jeffrey Antman of Passaic, NJ, a state transit
agency worker, who won two tickets to a Nets or Devils game and a two-night stay at a NJ golf resort for his winning
entry.
Now I’m sure the jabs are already flying — "The crappy oceans: Come see for
yourself." "The cheesy Jersey Shore: Come see for yourself." The nightmare will continue for the PR and
tourism folks throughout the Garden State. This one will be abused I’m sure…just wait for SNL to do something. And of
course, as the Philly Daily News points out:
"While the protest (re: new ban on smoking in NJ) was bumping and grinding on his front steps, Gov. Codey – in a
truly odd stroke of timing – held a press conference to announce that New Jersey’s new state slogan is "Come see
for yourself." It seemed deliriously appropriate with strippers writhing and smoking on the Capitol steps."
Nice. Say what you will, Jersey rocks in my book.
