There’s one place in Alaska that I would very much like to go:
Kodiak Island. Have you heard of the Kodiak bear? It’s the largest bear in the
world (I think). They live there.
I bring it up because a friend of
mine and I were talking about Alaska and the places we’d most like to go there. He was talking about how muc hhe wanted
to check out Denali. But everyone does that, I said. What about one of those places most people don’t go. Exactly.
Kodiak Island
is the largest landmass in the Kodiak Archipelago, and is epic in its natural beauty, dramatic views, excellent fishing
and high-pitched advnture. Did I mention the bears? Now, I’m not one for being eaten, but you have to admit it would be
a rush to see one of thes monsters in the wild. From a distance, of course.
The island is about 30 miles off the coast of Alaska, and the only way to reach it is by sea or
air. The Alaska Marine Highway System’s ferry Tustumena, AKA Tusty, makes the trip to Kodiak from Homer. Also, two
airlines make the hour-long flight from Anchorage to Kodiak four to eight times a day, depending on the season. If you
go, bring along lots of rain gear, as well as extra clothes and patience. When storms hit ,you will likely make good
friends with the folks at the B&B. Or your tent mate.
