Thanks to a reader who suggested this book of the day: The
River’s Tale: A Year on the Mekong, is a great read about a river trip from the source of the Mekong in Tibet down
to the Can Tho delta in Viet Nam. Written by a former New York Times correspondent in Asia, the book was published in
2003, and includes stories from Edward Gargan’s epic journey, which takes him through China, Laos and Cambodia as
well. The year-long voyage takes him 3,000 miles along the waterway, as he meets and interacts with the various
groups of people who inhabit the land along the shores of the Mekong. Here’s one review of the
book that will tell you a bit more about the issues addressed by Gargan along the way.
