2006
looks to be a busy year for Botswana, packed with an
array of festivals with flamingos, elephants and other members of the animal kingdom. This Travelmax/STA Travel
website has a list with a ranking of the best. There are two with four star ranking; the Maitisong Festival in April and Flowers in the Kalahari Desert
happening from November-December. Botswana’s biggest, the Maitisong, is a celebration in performing arts in Gaborone
where anything goes and one should expect the bizarre. Music, dance and big name artists take to the stage in this two
part programme of outdoor and indoor theater. Outdoor programmes are free and the indoor ones for an entrance fee.
Everything you could possible expect from a festival with high energy and pumping music can be found at the Maitisong
including the local cuisine. Mmm…
Towards the end of the year Khutse Game Reserve opens its doors to the
public to showcase a piece of desert meadow transformed by rainfall when flowers of bright color rise from the
inhospitable desert lands. The Kalahari Desert rarely sees rainfall and covers about two-thirds of Botswana, making it
a tough destination to visit. And while the Khutse Game Reserve doesn’t have as many animals as most parks, it can
offer a great to the experienced traveler. If you’re in Botswana late this year, then do it for the flowers man.
