Perhaps it’s time I hit the
slopes myself. After reading this miraculous piece at Stellar about 72 year-old Derek Glover, who had been deaf for
15 years I’m feeling as if anything can happen. Glover attributes his hearing loss to firing rounds on the army shooting
range when he was a soldier serving for the National Service. It was just recently on his skiing vacation in Italian Dolomites that his hearing was
restored.
"I was coming down in a cable
car with my daughter and son-in-law. All of a sudden my ears went pop and their voices were dead clear, it was
unbelievable!" said Glover.
While doctors won’t be prescribing holidays to the Alps for the hard
of hearing anytime soon and state change of altitude is an unusual way of restoring hearing, reading that really got me
wound up here. I’d take a trip anywhere; to the Dolomites, go see a voodoo priestess, Niagara Falls, Congo, and Narnia
if it really existed and someone told me I could regain my hearing. I’ve had bi-lateral hearing impairment with
continuous ringing in the ears since I was 16 from a car accident. The first three weeks after that accident I was
completely deaf, but had a few small "pops" of my own where only a portion returned, so things aren’t all
that bad. However, coming back from a vacation with near-perfect hearing after years of silence has got to be one of
the best damn souvenirs ever.
