The beginning of a new year always brings with it a slew of travel
articles spewing forth multitudes of suggestions on where to visit during the upcoming year—the hottest
locations, best beaches, most affordable hotels, best place to take the kids, etc, etc…
And yes, we here at Galding are guilty of this as well.
It was therefore, with great pleasure that I came across an article in the Sunday Times (UK) detailing
the places NOT to visit this year.
Although short, and focusing solely on the overly-visited Spanish coast so popular with vacationing Brits, the
article is well worth a quick read. And, it’s hilarious. For example, journalist Chris Haslam is
quick to point out that the name of one of the places on his list, Torremolinos, is Spanish for “unspeakable
horror,” a linguistic coincidence that really isn’t much of one at all. The town is apparently a
“post-apocalyptic world of drunken, nihilistic youth” in which “civilization clearly stopped visiting
sometime in the 1970s.”
