Unless you
happen to be in Greece, most tourists tromping through Europe rarely take the time to visit the numerous islands which
dot miles of coastline. I’ve learned over the years, however, that island life is always slightly different
than what you might find on the mainland. Often times it’s actually better.
Sarah Turner of The Observer (UK) has graciously provided us with a list of Europe’s islands. But
not just any list. This one focuses on those “secret” islands which are so wonderful that locals
don’t want anyone to find out about them. Indeed, there are many I’ve never even heard of—such
as the Iles d’Hyeres, off the coast of
France. France has islands???
Turner’s secret list of isles also includes Sylt (the German Martha’s Vineyard),
the Aland Islands (Finnish home to Viking burial grounds and great
fishing) Lopud, Croatia (where there are no cars or motorbikes, but plenty of bars and restaurants) and a dozen
others. They’re probably not as “secret” and “hidden” as her article suggests, but
they are off the beaten path and undoubtedly worth the time to seek out and enjoy.
