On the Absurdity of Lists

We’ve done our share of top ten (or whatever) lists here, and I’m going to go ahead and say I’ve always thought these were kind of ridiculous exercises. I mean, it’s cool to highlight a type of activity and hone a wide array of destinations down to a few good ones, but saying that a particular beach is somehow the best is rather stupid. I mean, first of all, the person rating these beaches has probably only been to a few in his/her lifetime. In fact, they probably just read the list in a magazine or series of them and pulled ideas from that source.

Anyway, all this is to register my agreement with Tim Leffel over at his Cheapest Destinations site. he rags on the tendency to rate things and singles out the towering idiocy of a poll that showed Oasis’ Debut as the best album of all time and Ayn rand’s Atlas Shrugged as the best novel. Both are absurd and fine examples of how list-makers can get carried away. That said, stay tuned for more lists from us. I’m sure we won’t be able to resist future list-making.
