Scotland’s Orkney Islands have long been a place I’ve been dying to visit. Isolated, peaceful, rugged and beautiful, they strike me as 70 miniature Irelands just waiting to be soaked up and enjoyed.
According to The New York Times, however, alternatives are slowly developing to appease those who might bore of such peaceful tranquility. This is good news for the 6,200 people who live in Kirkwall, the capital. Instead of watching the proverbial paint dry, locals and tourists alike can now visit a handful of recently opened pubs and nightclubs that are changing the dynamics of this small town.
Restaurants and fashionable shops round out the mix and transform little ‘ole Kirkwall into a fun place indeed. It ain’t New York City, but it’s a far cry from the Orkney Islands of the past.
