Round Ireland with a Fridge by Tony Hawks

With St. Patrick’s day coming up this weekend, I thought I’d share my all-time favorite travel book about Ireland: Tony Hawks‘s (no, not the skateboarder) “Round Ireland with a Fridge.”

While traveling in Ireland, British comedian/musician Tony Hawks noticed a peculiar hitchhiker standing on the side of the road — one with a refrigerator in tow — and he wonders who on Earth would pick up a hitchhiker with a fridge? Years later on a drunken night with a friend, a bet was made: could Tony hitchhike his way around Ireland with a fridge? “Ireland surely is the only place in the world where you could get one hundred percent approval for doing something so daft,” Tony says in his website’s FAQ.

The book follows him and his fridge as they make their way around Ireland, thumbs out, hitching rides from unsuspecting and completely hospitable Irish folks. It’s hilarious!

What’s your favorite book about Ireland? Let me know, and come St. Patty’s Day, I’ll do a round-up.
