While they may be a little more expensive, Bed and Breakfast lodging can often be a rewarding experience. They’re typically located in unique, cozy buildings, and the ability to talk with the family in charge can be a great way to learn more about a place. If you’re not used to staying in them, however, you might be surprised at the differences between them and a Holiday Inn, so here are a few questions to ask a potential B&B before you commit to staying, from the Travel Smart newsletter:
- Location. Is the inn on a main street, near a highway, next to a school, hospital or bar? Is there free parking?
- Pets. Are pets allowed and is there an extra charge?
- Children. Are children allowed and if so, at what ages? Is there an extra charge for kids sharing their parents’ room? Is a crib available? Can baby formula be stored in the refrigerator?
- Breakfast. Is breakfast included in the price? When is it served and is it continental or bacon and eggs? Can it be delivered to the room? Are there in-room refrigerators and coffee-makers?
- Conveniences. Is the bathroom shared or private? Does it have both tub and shower? Is there a TV? Cable? DVD player? Air conditioner?
- Activities at the B&B. Is there an Internet connection available? Are there any sports facilities or equipment available – pool, bikes, tennis? How about DVDs, games, books or puzzles to borrow?
- Activities nearby. What sites, shops or parks are within walking distance? Within an hour’s drive?
- Policies. What are the rules for cancellations and refunds?
- Access. Is someone at the front desk around the clock? If not, when can guests arrive, and are keys available for coming and going at will?
