Ten Best Helicopter Tours

I accomplished a lifelong goal last summer when I took my first helicopter ride–a flight to a glacier in Alaska. It was a phenomenal experience and one I would do again in a second. There is, after all, something so very exhilarating about bobbing up and down in the air, hundreds of feet above the ground. But more amazing, were the views and access we had of the glacier.

Helicopter touring is not just limited to remote glaciers, however. One can go on helicopter tours in countless scenic locations around the globe.

So, which locations are the most outstanding? Gabe Weisert over at Forbes Traveler has compiled a list of what he feels are the ten best. In typical Forbes fashion, the list is organized as a slide show with each helicopter flight captured in a cool photograph.

I wasn’t surprised to see that Alaska made the list, as well as the Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls and Hawaii. But there were also a few surprises I hadn’t expected, such as the Great Barrier Reef. In addition, the list includes a couple of tantalizing places I’ve never heard of before–such as Rotorua, New Zealand where Volcanic Air Safaris flies tourists over “thermal springs, mud pools and sulphur vents.” Cool!

Lastly, be sure to read the read the article before jumping over to the slide show. Weisert includes some helpful hints that will make you trip more enjoyable. Make sure your pilot, for example, has at least 1,000 hours of fly time before entrusting your life in his hands. Otherwise your trip might suck in a very bad way.
