Just wanted to share this pretty cool blog on Greece as seen through the eyes of an American-Irish expat couple living in the isles. They keep the site fairly updated discussing a range of subjects on the Greek Islands and what it’s like as an expat living abroad. These are the kinds of blogs that get me into trouble. They make me want to take the plunge myself and head to foreign lands to settle in for a while if not forever.

The Siren Song of Santorini

Perhaps overexposed and cliché, the Greek island of Santorini continues to impress, woo, and suck in tourists with its siren song of pleasure, beauty, and quintessential Greekness.

Although it may be tempting to slander this island as touristy and remove it from travel plans, to do so is a very big mistake. Santorini, despite its immense popularity, has managed to maintain its roots and soldier onward, for the most part, unadulterated.

Adrian Mourby, writing for The Independent, agrees. He paints an equally impressed picture of the Greek isle, which he describes as “nature’s work of art.” The article covers the regular spots, such as the quaint town of Oia perched high above the ocean, and introduces us to some new ones-such as Ikies, “a honeycomb of old cave houses” with small terraces, private pools, and “a staff whose only desire in life is to fix you drinks.”

I don’t know about you, but I think I hear that siren song calling my name…

Each day I post a word that I find online somewhere that tickles my fancy or one I’ve pulled from my own very personal foreign language vocabulary bank, but what I’d really love to do is the whole immersion thing some place like Greece. You know, spend months soaking in sun from the sky and the sounds of the people… Ah. How good life could in Santorini for a few months. Don’t you agree? I mean, it doesn’t have to be Greece, but wouldn’t it be nice to get away for a while?

I really enjoy readong Fodor’s Underrated series. They always have some place in there that I’ve never heard of, but which I immediately add to my list of “must see” places. Recently they featured a piece on Thessaloniki in (you guessed it) Greece. They provde ample detail on when to go, what to do there, what to see and so on. Give this one a special look.
