Travel Scams and Theft

The American Society of Travel Agents met earlier this week for a panel discussion on topics such
as travel scams and more so identity theft. 
USA Today reports the panel is
more concerned with the increase of theft through spyware from seedy pop-up ads offering seemingly great vacation
deals, while actual travel-related fraud has decreased in the last few years.  A few quick reference tips to
avoiding sharing your dream vacation and personal information with con-artists:

  • Remember nothing is free and if something states so, read the fine print.

  • Download spyware and get rid of those aggravating and sometimes dangerous pop-ups.

  • For the best buyer protection, pay by credit card.

Casting Call: Treasure Hunters

As another global, adventure, travel, reality show prepares to take off I can’t help thinking that an
opportunity like such has snuck across each of our misty, dreamy minds.  We’ve
shuffled our feet from side-to-side and tried to keep our secret longing to be spoiled like everyone else inside. 
Here is your chance to let that feeling go, kick the little voice saying “that’s stupid,” aside and send in your
application.  NBC is now casting for “Treasure
Hunters”  where teams of three will compete in a global treasure hunt for riches.  Go for it!

Mobile’s Azaleah House

If something about last weeks post on Alabama
food’s struck a nerve, has your car all gassed up  and ready to go, try staying at the
Azaleah House in Mobile, AL.  Built in 1904 the Colonial Home
was a family home for the most part, but it’s present owners gave it a face-lift in 2003 for guest seeking
southern hospitality at it’s best.  Your stay doesn’t start in your bedroom though, as you can drop your bags and
cozy up in the front porch on the swing.  Watch the azalea’s in bloom as you sip cool ice tea. Consider a
game of bid whist in the parlor while sharing  stories from the good old days.  Take life slow and let
the easiness of the south become you while staying at the Azaleah House.

down…or try to remember them, anyway. Then head over to a great site called
43 Things, and I think you’ll be amazed at how much you have in common with other folks, how many people out there
share your same interests. For example, here are the folks who want to travel
around the world. Or those who want to
learn Italian. A pretty cool concept, I think.

Speaking of traveling celebs…I forgot to mention
this
piece by Carrie “Princess Leia” Fisher on her trip to China. Now this is the kind of celeb traveling I can
handle. Just a funny piece, nicely written (she is a novelist, after all), about her experience. No bloody
evangelizing a cause in a place that she probably couldn’t spell and didn’t know existed until her agent
called.
