Fighting Over Hans Island

I love this stuff. After all these years when it seems as if most issues of territorial dispute are a thing of the past (Kashmir not withstanding)…turns out I was wrong. Canada and Denmark are in a tiff over a tiny Arctic island called Hans Island, situated between Canada’s Ellesmere Island and Greenland, which belongs to Denmark.

The shenanigans are humorous. Canadian Defense Minister Bill Graham “secretly” visited the island and said that Canada had always regarded the 1.3-square-kilometre island as part of Canadian territory. The Danes begged to differ. The incident hasn’t led to an all out invasion of the island by either party, but they are still trying to sort out who the island belongs to…

Lars von Trier

Just a quickie on one of my favorite Directors. Lars von Trier of Denmark would have had me at hello, but I had to accept the fact that he’s never been to America, nor does he really wish to come. People who don’t want to come to America have always made me raise an eyebrow. (Though there are several good reasons to stay put elsewhere.) But people who have never been to America and continuously make films set in American cities makes me raise a double eyebrow. (Dogville, Dancer in the Dark, and the upcoming Manderlay to name a few examples.)

According to Trier enough American news is viewed on Danish television for him to never step foot in the country and still be completely aware of everything going on. Having touched on topics in American history like the Great Depression and American slavery it intrigues me most how well he captures the human condition, suffering, and torment of the characters lives in well say, a place he’s never been. But suffering is suffering no matter where ever you are I suppose.

I could write for days about the incredible Director, but one other interesting bit I just found out about before I stop is on a project called Dimension. This film starring Udo Kier is a 33 year process being shot three minutes every year during the Christmas season in a different locations all over Europe. The premiere should take place in 2024. That’s what I call patience and filmmaking.

Copenhagen Story

In one of those great little BootsnAll stories that keep cropping up, traveler Ray Leung checks out some hookers, downs a robust Danish meal, ruminates on hash cookies and a booty call in Copenhagen. It’s a quick colorful story, but a nice one to get Sunday started.

Hanging With Hippies in Denmark

Europe may deliver a brutal blow of sticker shock should you be heading there soon, but at least for now you can still hang out and get high with hippies in Denmark…if that’s your thing. Yes, despite the right-wing government’s desire to crack down on the Christiania neighborhood, it is still thriving, and is one of the few places you can buy and smoke marijuana legally.

A former naval base on 80 acres of prime waterfront real estate, Christiania is still owned by Denmark’s Ministry of Defense. The government has sought to get rid of the community’s seedier elements in the past, but they failed. So if you get going now, you might still have a chance to get some of that prime Danish reefer (about whiich I know nothing).
