Holistic Holiday Cruise

Don’t you hate it when you return from vacation to find your luggage isn’t the only thing you’re packing? Wouldn’t it be great to go on a cruise, eat all you wish and come back as slim, fit and healthy as ever? Yeah, I think we all long deeply for that one and I’m not promising anything by sending you to this link, but it’s worth scoping out. A Taste of Health & Vegetarian Times is hosting a seven day trip for the mind, body and spirit. Holistic Holiday at Sea IV – Voyage to Well-Being takes to the seas March 4-March 11, 2007.

What’s cool about the cruise? Experts in holistic living and natural health will be on board shedding their light on any interested takers during lectures and workshops. Continuing education credits (CEU’s) will also be available. The liner itself is said to be a world premier Italian luxury and will stop at ports in the Dominica Republic, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, Grand Turk and the U.S. Virgin Islands to name only a healthy handful.

So you probably won’t loose any weight, but you’ll have a good time.

Ted Drewes Frozen Custard a St. Louie Treat

From the moment I exited my flight into the city I was caught off guard by the blistering afternoon heat. That’s how I knew that ole’ Mid-West heat wave they were talking about in the news was no joke, but I wasn’t expecting it to be nearly this bad. I wanted ice cream. When I met my family down at baggage claim I immediately made my desire for a cool delicious sugary snack known and like a robot programmed to say one line and one line only I spurted it out once more. “I want ice cream.”

My father, who’d be anticipating my trip long ago, had a better idea. Ted Drewes, a well-known St. Louis frozen custard joint serving up the yummies since lord knows when, but this special treat didn’t come until a few days later. Talk about built up excitement! I don’t know how I waited or even survived. My pops figured a mini-concrete frozen custard would be the perfect accompaniment to a family portrait shoot, so once we made through the grueling staged poses we took off and headed towards the custard.

If you’ll excuse me for a moment I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you what the custard was like. You can call me a duff when I say this, but it was guuuud! I mean it wasn’t just good – it was guuuud! Man, I hadn’t had a brain freeze like the one I encountered gobbling down the fine frozen fare in ages.

Anytime I step off a hot plane in St. Louis, I’ll be beyond happy to head to Ted Drewes. Even if it’s two days after the fact.

Ted Drewes is located at 6726 Chippewa, St, Louis, MO 63109.

Hamptons Wine & Food Festival

If you live on the East Coast and are a bit of a foodie…or a winey (whiner?) you might be interested to know that next weekend the 2nd Annual Hamptons Wine & Food Festival commences. Yes, there will be lots of comestibles, and also lots of wine to be consumed. The parties will put you in the spirit as you hang out with all the well-dressed nicely-coiffed locals. I got the heads up on the event from our sister site Luxist, who posted about the event and has more to say about the various VIP parties that most of us would never be admitted to.

Fried Olives…Yum

My wife LOVES olives. We have jars galore inside our fridge, and I have to confess I’m not such a fan. Olive oil on bread? Sure, delish. But olives alone? Nah. You can have them. But this story over at NPR alerted me to a new way to prepare olives that kind of made me drool (it could be because it is just before lunch and I am very hungry). But in the small Italian town of Cagli, about four hours northeast of Rome, in Italy’s eastern Le Marche, they make a yummy-sounding little dish whereby they stuff olives with spiced ground meat and then fry the suckers. Too bad the folks at Google, or someone else for that matter, hasn’t yet invented a way to download food, because right now I’d pay a pretty penny…or Lira…to have some of these babies come right through my modem.

World Recipe Book

People that like to cook already know about these things, but since I just blogged about fortune cookies I figured I may as well provide those of us that occasionally like to try something new every now and then with a worldly recipe site. The World Recipe Book online has over 21,000 free recipes online now as of 2005. I went looking through some and I have to tell you pictures are everything and what many of these recipes are missing. I like to see what the dish I’m going to be cooking is supposed to look like, but that could just be me. Other than that I haven’t any real complaints. Look up Jewish fare, Korean or a chutney dish to whip up for the weekend. Yum.
