Survey Says! A Kick in the Groin!

For years and years it was thought that the Japanese were far ahead of us in terms of technology and even aspects of culture (couldn’t we use a dose of Japanese politeness?). I never placed much credibility in that that until I came across this video that convinced me that the Japanese are, in fact a superior culture.

The game show in this video features contestants, males exclusively, who compete in a game of knowledge. The questions are hard…well, I actually have no idea if they are hard or not, but for the sake of argument let’s say they are. All fine and dandy, and no different than the myriad trivia shows we all know and love. What’s so lovely and different is that when a contestant gets a question wrong, he is summarily kicked in the balls. Brilliant, eh? It got me thinking about all sorts of fine ways to improve everything from Jeopardy to American Idol to the Presidential Debates.

Word for the Travel Wise (07/25/06)

Last week some time I spotted the coolest collectibles at this Japanese toy store in Los Angeles. I’m not really the type to collect a lot of anything, due to my changing digs so often, but these toys were off-beat. Certainly not like the Ken and Barbie dolls I had as a young girl with pig-tails. I know it’s a little early to start thinking about it, but I might go ahead and tack one of these odd plastic creations on my Christmas list. Just one…

Today’s word is a Japanese word used in Japan:

omocha – toy

Spoken Japanese comes smoothly for those who either practice or submit themselves to hours of Japanese pop music, but either way one can learn this language in through several avenues. Japanese Online is a VERY good FREE site to start learning. They have audio and a great conversation lessons. The lessons get more in-depth as you become a registered user which is still free of charge. Takese.com has a list of over 2000 words worth checking out. Those on the road already may want to pick up the LP Japanese phrasebook or check into a school for a few weeks of learning. Study Abroad has a list of school located all over the country. If you’re seeking help with written Japanese best of luck to you!

Past Japanese words: hajimemashite, dewa mata, tomodachi

The Happiest Country on Earth is…

For those of you unfamiliar with the reality TV series Survivor or have better things to do with your time than watch average folk battle it our for prizes and such by competing in gladiator type competitions, you may not be familiar Vanuatu. Perhaps, you’re fortunate enough to know about the group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean without the help of television and if you are you may also like to know that Vanuatu has ranked tops as the world’s happiest country. According to this Yahoo News piece, a study measuring people’s wellbeing and their impact on the environment has ranked Vanuatu at the top with Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, and Panama trailing close behind to complete the world’s top 5 happiest places to reside. Not really surprising if you ask me. Islands always come off as cheerful places to me and having been to Costa Rica myself, I could certainly see myself living there. As far as Vanuatu is concerned – I’d love to go there as much as I’d love to go to Somalia. Happiness is what you make it.

The Happy Planet Index is complied by the British New Economics Foundation (NEF) and also combines life satisfaction, life expectancy and environmental footprint to rank countries. Hopefully the results won’t drive herds of shutter-bug tourists to happy little Vanuatu or away from Zimbabwe, an African country my friend finds as one of the best, but ranks 178 on the list. The U.S. comes in at 150, Canada (111), France (129), Germany (81), Japan (95) and Russia (172).

What do you think? Agree or disagree? What do you consider the happiest place on Earth?

Robot Museum

The good folks at Engadget want to help find something for the geek in you to do next time you head to Japan. As if that country, and Tokyo especially, wasn’t a geek fantasyland already, what with all the high-tech gadgets and gizmos available that you won’t see here for five years.

Well, the newest attraction coming out of Japan is the Robot Museum, the country’s first museum fully dedicated to showing off the wide range of robots of the world. Ohh, ahh. I know, I can hear the synapses in your brain crackling with glee. The new museum is expected to open in Nagoya’s Sakae district in October.
