Photo of the Day – Chairman Mao Portrait

History is all around us, particularly in a country like China. Whether you’re walking along the magnificent Great Wall or gazing in awe at the Forbidden City in Beijing. Today’s photo, taken by Flickr user Trent Strohm, offers us yet another unique glimpse of China’s remarkable history: Chairman Mao, leader of the Chinese Revolution. Trent’s inclusion of the soldier in front of Mao’s portrait adds an interesting visual story to the photograph. It seems to be telling us the ghosts of China’s past are ever-present, asserting their watchful gaze over the present day.

Have any great photos from your own travels? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day- Kensington Gardens

Called “I need a break” this photo from Flicker contributor Marco Musnjak shows chairs in Hyde Park on a cloudy summer day taken in Kensington Gardens, London, England using a Nikon D90.

Offering a wide variety of compositions using a variety of cameras, Marco’s photostream is one you’ll want to visit.

We want to see your work too. Upload an image to Flickr’s Gadling Group Pool. Chosen images end up as future Photos of the Day.

Photo of the day – Cunningham Cabin, Grand Tetons

Today’s Photo of the Day was snapped last summer by JasonBechtel inside the famous Cunningham Cabin in Grand Teton National Park. The sky, mountains, and clouds contrast startlingly with the log cabin interior, presenting a skillfully handled double framing. The contrast is so sharp that it almost looks fake.

We’re fans of JasonBechtel, and in fact today’s selection isn’t his first visit to our rodeo. But even if you’ve never submitted an image to us for consideration, don’t be shy. We want to see your work. Upload an image or several to Flickr’s Gadling Group Pool. Chosen images end up as future Photos of the Day.

Photo of the day – The Old Man and the Sea

Context is a funny thing. If this man were, say, working on his car in Passaic, New Jersey, we wouldn’t find him very romantic or interesting. But put him on a boat on the Adriatic Sea in Slovenia and he’s now a perfect travel photo subject, thanks to Flickr user SummitVoice1. He makes us sigh and think, “That’s the life. Just a man, a simple boat and the open water.”

He should still probably put on a clean shirt, though. Fare thee well, old salt, hope your day is smooth sailing!

Find a classic travel subject for your photos? Post your favorites to the Gadling Flickr pool and we may use one for a future Photo of the Day.

Video of the Day – Shanghai via iPhone

Photographer Chase Jarvis has gained a notable amount of internet fame for coining the phrase “the best camera is the one that’s with you”. For anyone that travels extensively, this couldn’t be more true.

If you love shooting video, then there’s a good chance that you’ve already bought a professional DSLR or HDV camcorder. But what if you don’t want to lug your expensive investment to a new country? Then follow art director/designer Andrew Kimmell’s lead and reach for your phone.

With the help of some Photojojo lenses, Kimmell documented his trip to Shanghai entirely on an iPhone 4. I’ll venture a guess that some color correction with Magic Bullet Colorista II (in Final Cut Pro) also assisted in polishing it up. But I think it proves that with a little post-production love, anyone can shoot beautiful HD footage on the go.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your phone, capture your best travel moments and share it with us in the comment section below. It could be our next Photo / Video of the Day.
