Photo of the Day (11.01.10)

Most of us only interact with a few types of airline and airport employees. We chat with flight attendants, check-in with gate agents and get frisked by TSA officers. It’s often easy to forget that there are scores of people working on the Tarmac to keep planes well maintained and airports running smoothly. Those beverages don’t put themselves on the planes. Someone is driving that fuel truck. That flight delay caused by a maintenance issue? It might annoy you, but it allowed a highly-skilled mechanic to service your aircraft so that you’ll be able travel safely.

I was reminded of all of those hardworking folks when I saw this photo by Flickr user stefantrego. Sure, airports can be annoying (though some people love them) but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t take a moment to marvel at the impressive efforts put forth by all those people who keep things moving so that we can keep on moving, as well.

Happy Halloween! Er, should I make that Happy Day of the Dead? Believe it or not, America isn’t the only country that likes to celebrate spooky holidays. In Mexico and some parts of Latin America, November 2nd is the chosen day to remember and celebrate the lives of deceased ancestors. Though one might think a holiday about death would be a somber affair, it’s usually not. Much like Halloween, family and friends get together to laugh, eat some good food and pay tribute to those who have passed. The jolly skeletons captured here by Flickr user borderfilms (Doug) in Chiapas, Mexico are a common Day of the Dead decorating theme.

Taken any great photos during your travels? Why not add them to the Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

What I love about this photo is what’s at the bottom of the waterfall, in that I wonder what’s there. It looks like the jungle got super thirsty and simply swallowed the creek. Otherwise, if I were those hikers, I’d definitely be hoping for a swimming hole. I also appreciate how the steep, rocky drop contrasts with the lush, rolling hills around it. This Southeast Asian scene was captured in the Philippines Guam by snowjumpr.

Have any photos that make might make us wish for a swimming hole at the bottom of our fantasies? Upload them to Gadling’s Flickr pool, and we just might choose one for our Photo of the Day feature.

This photo, taken by Flickr user Andrey Dorokhov as part of a 365 Project, captures Moscow’s Mezhdunarodnaya metro station in a moment of real stillness. Opened in 2006, the Mazhdunarodyaya station really does look like a spaceship from this angle. No surprise then that Dorokhov titled the photo Day 246, Spaceship.

Got a spaceship-esque image in your personal photography library? Post it to Gadling’s Flickr pool and we just might feature it as an upcoming Photo of the Day.

Six months ago today, I arrived in Turkey, jetlagged and excited to begin my current adventure as an expat. Since then, I’ve gotten to know the many hills, museums, and cafes in this city nearly as well as New York. In honor of this anniversary, I chose this photo by Flick user Luke Robinson that says “Istanbul” to me with nary a kebap, bazaar, or minaret in sight. It’s on the Galata Bridge spanning the Golden Horn, where dozens of fishermen stand every day in hopes of catching a fish from the Bosphorus. Some men fish for a living, others fish for pleasure, and you can spot more than a few men wearing suits and leather shoes. Hungry for fish? The bridge’s lower level is packed with fish restaurants serving the catch of the day.

Do you have a great travel photo that captures the essence of a place? Upload it to our Flickr Pool and it could be a future Gadling Photo of the Day.
