If you’re feeling the need for a little underground adventure, October is the perfect time of year to visit the Karst region in Slovenia. Ranking as one of the largest underground canyons in the world, Slovenia’s Škocjan Caves stretch for 5.8km at depths of 250m below ground. Why October? Travelers headed this way in the autumn months can skip the summer crowds and take leisurely tours before the unpleasant bitterness of winter sets in.

This rare picture was captured on the sly by Flickr user StrudelMonkey in the Škocjan’s final cavern. Here, visitors can peer at the Reka River which flows just 50m beneath the carefully marked paths. Taking photos isn’t permitted in the caves (hence the blur in the picture), so follow StrudelMonkey’s lead and turn your flash off if you want share your memories with the folks at home.

The great thing about traveling with friends is that you really get to spend a tremendous amount of time together. Assuming you haven’t chosen a bad travel partner, that extended and intense time together can truly take a friendship to the next level. However, even best friends get sick of each other from time to time. Eating every meal together, sharing every bedroom and never having an privacy will wear on everybody. Eventually, someone is bound to snap. Fights with your travel companions are inevitable. They happen to the best of us.

This photo by Flickr user tajkd shows what happens when someone finally gets sick of their partner walking too damn slowly. Even in the Galapagos, surrounded by pristine beauty, tempers will eventually flare when someone is keeping the group from arriving to their lunch spot in a timely fashion. Pick up the pace, dude!

Spontaneity and travel go hand-in-hand. Those surprising moments, when we let down our guard and something unexpected happens, is what travel is all about, right? Today’s photo, from Flickr user Gus NYC, looks to me like one of those spontaneous moments. A brilliant red wall. A guard caught in a moment of repose. A photographer who’s cleverly framed the shot so it’s all pushed oddly to the right. It’s a strange subject for a photo, but it nevertheless manages to leave the viewer wanting more.

In my travels, I’ve noticed that there are cat countries and dog countries. Some places, like Morocco, are littered (pun alert) with stray cats. There are other nations, like many of those in the Caribbean, that are home to large populations of stray dogs. Then, of course, there are the monkey countries, but that’s a story for another day. What you don’t see nearly enough of, however, are pig countries. Sure. there are populations of dangerous wild pigs out there, but one wants to encounter a pack of those. I’m talking about cute little pigs. Who wouldn’t enjoy stumbling into a couple of cuddly porkers downtown?

This photo by Flickr user Where and Back shows off just such a dream scenario. That must be the nice part of town because those two look dapper. And they provide a nice change of pace from the stray dogs and cats (and monkeys) that we’re all used to seeing.

I’m one of those weird adults who doesn’t know how to ride a bike. No great excuse, just never bothered to learn as a kid, preferring indoor pursuits and walking on nice solid ground, and it’s become harder to learn as an adult. My husband has attempted several times over the years and now I’m sort of like Toonces the driving cat – I can ride, just not very well. Maybe this fellow in Tokyo is also a non-bike rider and thus looks a bit shamed by the row of bicycles. No matter the reason for his sour face, this photo by Flickr user jrodmanjr is a nice composition in black and white of a city that takes its eco-friendly commuting seriously.
