Photo of the Day (10.5.10)

Contrary to what it may look like, today’s Photo of the Day is not from the set of Indiana Jones 5. Welcome to the Karakoram; one of the greatest and most sparsely inhabited mountain ranges in the world.

Apart from being home to K2, the Karakoram is most well known for hosting the highest international paved road in the world – the Karakoram Highway. Completed in 1986, the 1,300km road connects Kashgar in the Xinjiang region of China with Pakistan’s modern capital, Islamabad. This dramatic shot (don’t worry, this isn’t the highway) was captured by Flickr user madang86 over the Hunza River near Passu, Pakistan. It certainly gives a new meaning to the phrase “I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it”.

Have you risked life & limb to capture a great photo on your travels? We can’t wait to see it. Share it on our Flickr Pool and it could be our next Photo of the Day.

One of my favorite songs is “Somebody’s Watching Me” by Rockwell. Sure, he only got to record it because he was Motown chief Berry Gordy’s son. But it features a chorus sung by Michael Jackson and Jermaine Jackson (one of the top seven Jacksons) on backing vocals. It’s a fantastic song and a real anthem for paranoia.

This fantastic photo by Flickr user Flavio@Flickr is best enjoyed while listening to Rockwell. Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean that your nosy neighbor isn’t watching your every move.

Have a picture you took while spying on someone? Or, perhaps more appropriately, just some great travel photos? Submit your images to Gadling’s Flickr group and we might use one for a future Photo of the Day.

Tired of the same old ho-hum travel photos? Try tipping your camera on its side. Flickr user borderfilms (Doug) offers us this wonderful example from Chiapas, Mexico of how a little camera tip can add much needed visual intrigue to your own shots. I particularly enjoy the way the brightly colored red, yellow and white flags all converge around a single point on the cathedral’s facade. It looks like some kind of colonial laser gun, shooting beams of color and movement into the brilliant blue sky beyond.

Have any great travel photos you’d like to share with the world? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Puppets! Who doesn’t love a good puppet show? These guys look like they could get into some serious trouble, and I for one would like to witness it. Gadling favorite LadyExpat captured these colorful characters in Korea, at the 39th Annual Dance Mask Festival.

Have any photos from your travels that tell a good story? Upload them to Gadling’s Flickr pool, and we just might choose one for our Photo of the Day feature!

We’re nearly two weeks into autumn here in the Northern Hemisphere, but I had put off officially saying farewell to summer. I mean, it had been mild here in New York. But, this week brought rain, wind, cooler evenings and all the trappings of autumn. Kids are fully entrenched in the new school year, football season is hitting its stride and, yes, the foliage is getting ready to be peeped. Heck, it’s now October. Summer, my friends, is over.

This picture by Flickr user snowjumpr seems like a fitting goodbye. However, let us not mourn Summer’s loss. As the sun sets on the season of vacations, beach weekends and picnics, let’s enjoy the comfortable temperatures, pick some fresh apples and find our fat pants that make Thanksgiving oh so comfortable. Autumn has plenty of perks, not the least of which is the food. It’s pie season, folks!

Have a picture that shows you chasing summer? Or, even better, just some great travel photos? Submit your images to Gadling’s Flickr group and we might use one for a future Photo of the Day.
