Photo of the Day (8.29.10)

You never know what you’ll find when you wander. An unexpected conversation. A strange sight. Maybe you’ll even stumble upon a pink street, like Flickr user Michael Joseph Goldst…etc found in today’s photo from Bogota, Colombia. The bright pastel walls pocked with graffiti, atmospheric cobblestones and mysterious dark suited man make for an intriguing image. Wondering what else lies down this odd little alleyway? You’ll have to wander down to Colombia to found out for yourself.

Taken any great photos during your own travels? Why not share them with us by adding them to the Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

A peaceful and powerful scene from Orkney Island, Scotland. When I look at these rocks and think about how long they’ve been there, I picture them with roots connecting them to each other while keeping them grounded. I mean, really. They’ve been there a long, long time. Thanks to Flickr user localsurfer for adding this to Gadling’s Flickr pool.

According to this image’s creator, I Am Rob, this blurry, even distorted, photograph of a rain-splattered windshield was snapped in Southern California. I believe him. Everything about this image suggests Los Angeles in the late winter: the rain, the palm trees, and the darkness in what I can only assume is late afternoon. I love this photo for its Angeleno atmospherics, its bright horizon, and its lack of crispness.

Got an atmospherically-charged image of a favorite city? A snap of one or another fragment of Los Angeles that reveals more grit than gloss? Add it to the Gadling Flickr photo pool. We might just feature it as our Photo of the Day.

County fairs are full of good old-fashioned fun. Where else can you see a tractor pull, eat nothing but deep-fried foods, see carnies in their native habitats, and admire the area’s finest livestock, all in a day? This photo from the Nicollet County Fair in Minnesota by mlmartense is titled “the surly llama” but I get more of a coquettish, even cunning, vibe. It’s as if the llama alpaca has big plans for me to follow. Actually, llamas and alpacas are quite docile and gentle creatures often used as therapy animals as they have a calming effect on people. Looking into this fella’s eyes, I can see how an hour of feeding and hugging a llama or alpaca could be an excellent form of therapy.

Have you taken an evocative animal photo in your travels? Upload it to our Gadling Flickr pool (make it downloadable, please!) and it could be a future Photo of the Day.

UPDATED: It turns out this charming creature is, in fact, an alpaca and not a llama. Apologies to any pack animals offended by the mix up.

I think it’s fair to say that everyone deserves to experience a moment like this in their lifetime. A remote beach. A dramatic sunset. Stormy clouds hanging in the distance with nightfall soon approaching. Flickr user Ka wai punahele immortalized this picture perfect moment on the coast of Australia’s sparse Northern Territory, just outside the city of Darwin.

Casuarina Beach (the gorgeous subject of the photo) is in Darwin’s northern suburb of Brinkin, which is just a stone’s throw from the Darwin Airport. Darwin is one of Australia’s most modern capital cities, having been rebuilt once after WWII and again in 1974 after Cyclone Tracy.

Do you have a once-in-a-lifetime moment from your travels that must be shared? Upload it to our Gadling Flickr pool and it could be tomorrow’s Photo of the Day!
