We send a lot of mixed signals to kids. We tell them not to talk to strangers, then we encourage them to “tell the nice lady how old you are” when some random old bitty on the street approaches us. Or we give them a dollar to tip the creepy street performer who smells like garbage and Axe body spray. How are kids going to learn that all strangers are serial killers just waiting to snatch a child (most likely an attractive white girl under the age of 12 for maximum national news coverage)?

The poor child in this photo by Flickr user Marisoleta was probably pushed towards that blowhard by his overbearing mother. Now he’s deaf in his left ear and terrified of brass instruments thanks to confusing child-rearing methods. The poor bastard never had a chance to enjoy the music of big bands. Though, you could make the argument that he’s better off having an aversion to the rusty trombone.

Photography isn’t just about clicking a shot based on what’s in your viewfinder. Elements like lighting, framing and timing all matter when you’re hoping to capture that perfect shot. Just take a look at Flickr user andykee’s image of these four lake houses in Delaware for proof. Andy turned what could have otherwise been a ho-hum shot at the beach into a photo loaded with atmosphere. The muted gray colors, blurry reflections and ample space at the top and bottom suggest the structures are floating on air – mysterious ghost houses shrouded in mystery and intrigue.

Have any great shots from your recent travels? Why not share them with us by adding them to the Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

You know how it’s really popular for travelers to pose for photos in front of statues by mimicking them? Well, I sort of think this would be a really funny statue to mimic. You’d have to have the right hair, of course. Flickr user AlexSven captured this free spirit frozen into stone in Oslo, Norway.

Have any photos from your travels that make you want to strike a pose? Upload them to Gadling’s Flickr pool, and we just might choose one for our Photo of the Day feature.

Rainbows are the stuff of childhood drawings and goopy romance. They’re everywhere and they’re corny. The thing is, they’re also pretty awesome. They pop up in unexpected places and can’t help but delight most viewers. This image of a rainbow in the Haute-Savoie region of France, snapped by Moody75, allows its multicolored arc to reign supreme over a vast and apparently well-tended string of countryside hamlets. France’s alpine department of Haute-Savoie is no stranger to dramatic scenery. It shares Mont Blanc with the Italian region of Aosta.

Got an image of a rainbow lying around? Or perhaps another figment of childhood fantasy with adult appeal? Add it to the Gadling Flickr pool. If we fall in love with it we just might feature it as a Photo of the Day.

“Clang, clang, clang went the trolley,” sang Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis, giving the most charming mode of transportation its own theme song. Except this trolley isn’t in St. Louis or even San Francisco, it’s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, part of the oldest operating tram system in South America. Whether you call it a tram, a trolley, a streetcar, or a cable car, this Flickr photo by AlexSven captures the old-timey fun (also, suspenders are the most charming way to hold up pants). Nowadays, trolleys are making a comeback, with new or extended routes planned for many cities in the United States including St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, and Little Rock. Kennebunkport, Maine is even home to a trolley museum.
