Photo of the day (8.12.2010)

We’re in the dog days of summer, with hot temperatures and high levels of humidity making it hard to do more than eat ice cream, seek air conditioning, and think of fall weather. While there’s less than a month left in summer, and pretty soon we’ll be complaining about winter, the sticky August heat can feel downright oppressive.

That’s why this photo by Flickr user t3mujin taken in Lisbon, Portugal looks so inviting. The cool colors, hazy sky and water below provides some virtual heat relief. It’s tempting to jump right off the dock or at least enjoy the breeze alongside the fishermen.

Do you have a refreshing travel photo? Upload it to Gadling’s Flickr group and we might use it for a future Photo of the Day.

Badlands National Park; if the name alone doesn’t inspire you to visit, then perhaps this frame from photographer Theodore Scott will.

Inspired to get out and travel immediately after completing his college courses, Scott chose to skip his own graduation for a weeklong tour of the park. His takeaway? “..I crawled out of my tent most mornings to see bison scattered around the landscape. It was worth missing my graduation.”

Badlands is one of more than 100 national parks that will be opening their gates to the public free of charge this weekend, August 14-15. So what are you waiting for? Summer is almost over! Get out there, take pictures, and submit them to our Flickr Pool to be considered as our next Photo of the Day.

As a kid, there may be nothing more terrifying than feeling like you’ve gotten separated from your parents. I remember being in a supermarket, looking up and discovering that my mother was nowhere in sight. I started to freak out. Maybe some kids can handle that, but I was one of those children who would have been bullied if I was in Lord of the Flies.

That’s why it’s so nice to see this girl’s hand securely held by (presumably) her mother in this fantastic photo by Flickr user narinnr. This is a way better situation than having a kid on one of those child leashes. Those things are demoralizing.

Seen lost children? Bring them to the attention of the proper authorities! Then upload your travel pictures to the Gadling Flickr group and we might just use one for our next Photo of the Day.

What I love about this photo is not the abandoned look of this church; it doesn’t prompt any metaphors. It’s not the sweeping landscape background or the prairie grass foreground. It’s not what appears to be a sad little bird of a bell in the tiny tower.

What I love about this photo is the fact that the onion dome isn’t blue. I have nothing against blue onion domes, mind you. They’re colorful and pleasant and can really brighten up a cloudy skyline. It’s just that I equate onion domes with blue paint. And if the paint is blue, that means someone is keeping up the church. And if someone is keeping up a church, then… I might be woken up early on a Sunday morning by enthusiastic hymns. But this dome, captured by Flickr user Andry Dorokhov in Russia, has the relaxed, unkempt look of a Sunday sleep-in.

Have any other photos that remind you of relaxing weekends sleeping in? Upload them to Gadling’s Flickr pool, and we just might select one for our Photo of the Day feature!

I love the colors, the motion, and the title of this photo (Hanoi Breakfast) by andreakw. Is it the social whir behind the woman in the foreground? Is it her intensity? Is it simply dinnertime in my time zone?

This image is an easy reminder that breakfast is a culturally bound concept. That the pho’ in question also looks terribly delicious, spicy and dense with noodles, is also very appealing.

Got a great image of a beautiful meal in an exciting location? Add it to Gadling’s Flickr photo pool and we might just pluck it out of obscurity to be featured as our Photo of the Day.
