So maybe in water recompression is a bad idea…

After posting this story about an in water
recompression, a reader pointed me to a story about how in water recompression doesn’t always work. If you thought it
was a miracle anyone survived the previous story, read this one. If this had been a book, I couldn’t have put it down.
I promise you won’t be able to close your browser. A harrowing tale indeed. Anyone out there have their own near-miss
stories to share?

Another deep diving death

If you needed a reminder as to why not to dive deep, this article will do it. What I really
find unbelievable is that one of them actually survived. While this is certainly a sad (and foolheardy) story, it is
reassuring to see that one of them did live. Proof positive that underwater recompression can work. Stories like this
is what have kept my personal maximum depth record at 148ft where, I imagine, it will stand for a long long time.
When you think about it in terms of stories, thats already plenty deep.

Watching the Whales

It’s that time again. When an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 endangered humpback whales, consisting of approximately
two-thirds of the North Pacific stock, heave their flukes and bail on the frigid feeding grounds off Alaska to frolic
for a couple of months in the wonderful warm waters of Hawaii where they breed and calve.
The writer heads out on a whale-watching
expedition and spots some of the massive mammals hanging out.

Wetpixel Digital Shootout

Check out the possibilities for underwater fun and learning at Eric Cheng’s
Wetpixel
. This July (but you should consider signing up now) is the
Digital Shootout Bonaire, where you will go and learn all
the tricks of the trade for underwater shooting. There will be some serious underwater photo star power there with
Cheng himself present, but also Jim Watt, Berkley White and Dan Baldocchi. Big names, great times to be had by all.

Missing Diver off of Oahu found

Some of you may have heard of the missing diver who dissapeared off the coast of Oahu,
Hawaii two days ago. Unfortunetly, his body has been found. The cause of death is unknown though based on the
description a heart attack seems the most likely cause. See the original post
here. Read on for the information on the attempted
rescue.
