Scuba Diving…In New Mexico

Yes, you read the title right. You can scuba dive in parts of New Mexico apparently. Take the
Blue Hole, for example. As mentioned in this
article, the Blue Hole is
an 80 foot deep pool in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, which was formerly a fish hatchery. Divers, like the one who wrote this
story, flock to the Blue Hole as either a training or recreational site: some 8,000 diving permits are, according to
the article, issued on average per year. A private dive center adjacent to the pool handles diver gear rentals and
other essentials.

Diving with Great Whites

I’ve posted about Eric Cheng’s kick ass photo site before, but I wanted to draw attention to
this story he posted about diving with great white sharks off
the coast of Guadalupe in Mexico. He’s got a whole play-by-play of the trip with typically amazing photos. This is
adventure travel at its finest. Just looking a the photos, you can hear the theme from jaws in the background. Da dum.
Da dum da dum.

Commercial Diving: Dive and Get Paid

Getting paid to dive…wow, now that’s a cool thought. Here’s
a course that will teach you how to do it.
Ocean Corporation in Houston offers courses in commercial diving that will teach you all sorts of
skills that will let you parlay your passion for blue deeps into a career.

What can you be? Why, what about an underwater welder? Or a dive medic? Or a salvage diver like the guys in
Shadow Divers (whom I met at the
Adventure Travel Expo this last weekend). It would be one hell of a career
change for desk jockeys, but maybe that’s what you need. Let the sound of breathing underwater replace the dismal bleat
of the fax machine.

Ikelite Underwater Housing

So I posted about digital camera recommendations a while back and nearly everyone was in favor of the Nikon D70. So
I bought one. Now I need to find an underwater housing
for it so I can dive and shoot. The best I’ve found so far is from Ikelite, and I like what I see here. But as usual
with good underwater housings, it’s pricey. I wonder if anyone out there knows of anything better?
