The New York Times has
a solid piece on the Tortugas, one of the most distant spots in the continental US.
Dry Tortugas National Park is an outpost of Florida 70 miles from Key West in
the Gulf of Mexico, and it is known for being a great spot to hanng out and have a tropical holiday, but also a fine
dive spot (an aspect of the islands mentioned, albeit poorly, in the peice…although snorkeling is mentioned). The
Tortugas have a storied history,. There are some great historical sites there, and is is also the place that “Papa”
Ernest Hemingway first met Gregorio Fuentes, the inspiration for the fisherman in “The Old Man and the Sea,” when both
had been out fishing and were marooned there in a storm.
Diving Honduras Too
While we’re on the topic of Honduras, you might also consider heading there for some fine diving. I posted about Utila and the Bay Islands in Honduras over at Divester.
Honduras has long been known as one of the world’s finest dive spots, and as you peruse these sites, you’ll see why. Whale Sharks, a phantasmagoria of tropical fish, excellent reefs, not to mention the opportunity to dive AND learn Spanish, well, you just can’t go wrong making this your next destination.

What a great photo from James Wiseman’s reefpix.org. I
linked to the site over at divester because I liked it so
much. This is a terrific site that you should check out if you’re into dive photography.
James Cameron’s New UW Adventure
James Cameron is a big time hero of mine. Someday (fingers crossed) we might even get a podcast with him. But for
now, you should check out
his newest project. As
I’ve posted over at divester, Cameron is now engaged in an effort to educate the masses about the underwater world,
something he’s been invovled with extensively since he worked on the Abyss and certinaly through his recent work on the
Titanic. this is a project I’m going to follow closely, so keep you eyes open for more info here or at
Divester.

Nothing too extraordinary for the POTD. I just liked this
eel shot because I’m in a diving mood. He’s got a smile on his face that says, “Dude, you’re not supposed to be
down here.”
