One wild year in Banff National Park

Banff National Park, located in the the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada, is a truly wild place. But I’m not sure anyone knew just exactly how wild it is, until the park launched its remote wildlife camera project last year. The project stationed a number of webcams throughout the park, allowing visitors to check in on the various sites from the comfort of their own homes.

Now, the park has released a whole year’s worth of videos and images from one of those cameras, demonstrating the diversity of wildlife that wanders by on a regular basis. In the video, which you’ll find below, you’ll be able to spot plenty of deer and elk, but also bear, moose, wolves, mountain lions, and a whole lot more. There are even a few people who wander by on foot or mountain bike, and there were at least two groups of pack horses that passed by too.

It is a pretty amazing video that begins with a date stamp of May 31, 2010 and ends at May 30, 2011. In between, there is a whole lot of amazing sights to be seen.

Video of the day: Brooklyn fireworks gone astray

Fourth of July Fireworks on South 4th from Steve Smith on Vimeo.

Having had zero fireworks in Austin, Texas for July 4th, I found myself nonchalantly scrolling through my Facebook feed. I was eager to live vicariously through friends of mine seemingly everywhere else who were actually able to celebrate Independence Day via fireworks. I was on the hunt for status updates that would scratch that itch. And then it happened: I clicked on this video that was posted by a friend. In an aim to take a gander at some Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I checked out this little shot here and found myself suddenly grateful that there weren’t fireworks going off in Austin this past weekend.

Considering the purported patriotism of Texans in particular, one that I can at least sometimes back up as being intense, a ban on fireworks for July 4th could have imaginably led to fireworks like the street. And maybe those fireworks would have gone a bit astray like they do in this video. I’m happy I didn’t have to find out.

Video of the Day – Summer in the Alps

If you could capture your favorite snippets of summer, what would they be? Backyard barbecues? Ambitious road trips? A visit to your favorite lake?

Today’s Video of the Day is a gorgeous montage of summer moments from the French & Italian Alps, compiled by French filmmaker and mountain guide Sebastien Montaz-Rosset. Sebastien writes that he “filmed and edited what I personally like in the mountain culture: sports, lifestyle, art of living, culture and people”. The result is a dream-like sequence that shows off some of the best action and most beautiful scenes that the Alps have to offer.

Share your own favorite moments of summer with us! Submit your photos the Gadling Group on Flickr, or leave a link to your best videos in the comments section below. It could wind up as our next Photo / Video of the Day!

Whale cut from net in Sea of Cortez

While rescuers search for the seven missing people who were aboard a boat that capsized in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez over the weekend, these waters are filled with more than tragedy. I stumbled upon this video of a whale being cut from a hunting net and set free and I couldn’t help but share. Members of the Great Whale Conservatory happened upon this trapped humpback whale in the Sea of Cortez. The whale-lovers cut the net off of the whale on the spot. Although it took some time, they came out of the experience with a happy and healthy whale as well as some excellent footage.

I visited the Sea of Cortez myself in March of 2009. I spent the day lounging with Sea Lions and watching dolphins follow our boat. I thought the sea was beautiful, serene and unmistakable. Watching this video of this whale rescue has completely made my day.

Fireworks in Austin from July 4th, 2010

With Independence Day arriving tomorrow, many Texans are wondering just how to celebrate the 4th of July without fireworks. The sparkling display has been canceled this year due to the extreme drought in the area. I recently published a piece on Alternatives to Fireworks for those of you afflicted by firework-less regions. My favorite suggestion in the piece, cheesy as it may sound, was a fireworks film projected onto a wall. Some of my friends are having a BBQ tomorrow for the special day and I’m not kidding when I say: I totally plan on making everyone celebrate via the Austin fireworks show from last year’s July 4th.

Check out the video and honor the USA by way of YouTube video tomorrow if you have no other way to set off or see fireworks. And if you have seen or will be seeing fireworks for the holiday? Feel free to share your video link in the comments on this piece.
