Extraordinary wildlife video: Buffaloes unite to fight lions and save baby

Browsing through YouTube last night (taking advantage of it before it gets blocked here in Dubai, just like Flickr is), I came across this astounding video that some lucky travelers at Kruger National Park in South Africa were eye witnesses to. It has been viewed over 39 million times and has almost 43,000 comments.

They have managed to get live footage of a baby water buffalo being caught by a group of 6 lions, and then of over a 100 buffaloes being summoned to come save the baby and fight off the lions. Amazing. It’s a wonderful demonstration of how “animal-families” stick together to help each other survive in the wilderness. It’s about 8 1/2 minutes long, but well worth the watch. From the 4:40 mark onwards, it’s gold. You will find yourself cheering for the buffaloes as they make the lion kings look like scared and meek deers. There is an attack scene of a few seconds, but it’s not gory, so don’t worry about seeing anything hard on the eyes. A must, must watch.

Christmas festival in Sweden offers a special holiday treat

Yesterday, my daughter and I were treated to a trip to Jul på Fredriksdal, the Christmas festival at Fredriksdal Open-air Museum in Helsingborg, Sweden. Friends we are staying with in Denmark found out that this festival only happens one weekend each year. This weekend was it.

From the music, to the animals in the barn, to the glögg, this video shows exactly what the festival was like–exactly.

We stayed until after dark when the paths were lit by candles along the ground and strands of twinkling white lights in the trees and bushes.

The one thing I wish I had bought was one of the straw animal decorations you’ll see in the video. We walked to another area after I went into the building where this particular craftsman was located. I thought I would wait in case there was something else I wanted. There wasn’t. Unfortunatly, we didn’t have time to go back.

My friends wish they had bought a jar of the lemon honey which was in the building where the dancing took place. It was also near the straw decorations. The moral is: When you see something you like, buy it.

A windmill and the wonderful way it works

While searching out Dutch facts for a post on Dutch facts, details about windmills caught my attention.

Did you know that there used to be 10,000 windmills in the Netherlands? That was 150 years ago. Today there are about 1,000. This lovely video is an ode of sorts to one of the windmills that is still working. This one is located in the southern part of the country.

I watched this video twice. The interaction between the windmill operator and the windmill’s movements reminds me of the experience of watching a butterfly come out of a cocoon. Mesmerizing. The music fits perfectly.

Woman flies plane…with her feet

Meet the first and only licensed pilot in the United States with no arms.

That’s right.

Her name is Jessica Cox. She was born with a birth defect and has been forced to live her entire life using just her feet for everyday things, from text messaging and playing the piano to putting in her contact lenses.

She’s a black belt in tae kwon do who had a long-held fear of flying. So what did she do? She went ahead and got her pilot license, and can now fly solo using just her feet to fly and land her plane.

“It’s even hard for me to believe when I’m talking about it,” she tells an interviewer. “You just do it.”

Watch this video — it’s pretty amazing stuff.

And for an additional video of Jessica doing maintenance on her plane, check out this CNN video.
