Shotgun stays awake – Road trip tip

Do you know why that seat over there is called “shotgun”? It’s because on old-west stage coaches, there was a guy beside the driver who was looking out for him… with a shotgun.

It’s okay to catch a nap if you’re in the back seat, but if you’re riding shotgun, you should be awake — to keep the driver alert and entertained; to watch for wannabe roadkill; and to help out with navigation and radio tuning.

Too tired for that? Find a rest stop and everyone can grab a refreshing snooze. Or turn the radio up really loud.

Call the hotel – Hotel tip

In the Internet age, it’s easy to assume big travel websites are the place to go to get the best deal, but often time some good old fashioned haggling on the phone is all you need.

A travel website recommended a stay at the Holiday Inn in Aurora Colorado for $139 a night. By just calling the Hilton Garden Inn, I was able to secure a room for less money — with more amenities, a free shuttle, long term parking for $10 a month, and large rooms with luxurious bedding.

All I had to do was call and ask.

Prepare for an overnight – Packing tip

No one wants to sleep in an airport, but it may be unavoidable if your plane is grounded. Pack the following items in your carry-on to improve an emergency overnight airport stay:

  1. a tightly folded fleece blanket and inflatable pillow will provide comfort and warmth;
  2. snacks (granola bars, 100-calorie packs) are essential since some airport restaurants close at night;
  3. prescriptions, as well as some cough drops and aspirin, should be in a carry-on because checked bags may not be accessible;
  4. include a cell phone charger and spare change for pay phones;
  5. bring something to do such as a crossword, laptop or book.

It’s unlikely that you’ll be stranded in an airport overnight, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Use eRideshare.com – Road trip tip

By posting an ad on sites like Craigslist or eRideShare, you may find other travelers who would be happy to join you … and your friends … or whomever else … on your road trip.

Sharing a ride may give you the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. It will also help out another traveler in need. Finally, it may even save you a decent amount of money, since they should chip in for gas.

Pick your dining slot – Cruise tip

Cruising can be a great vacation, but some passengers find that cruise ships are overly crowded with children — especially around meal times. If you would prefer to dine without children running about, pick a dining time slot that’s later in the evening.

Not surprisingly, five o’clock dining times are the most packed with children, while the later ones usually have fewer children milling about.

Bonus: eating later gives you the chance to work on your tan for just a few more minutes!
