Surf’s up in … Chicago?

It’s not the beaches of Hawaii, but Chicago does have its own summertime fun. Now, thanks to the Chicago Kimpton Hotels, you can surf Lake Michigan and hang 10 with your buddies on the beach (or something like that).

Apparently, surfing is legal in Chicago at Montrose Beach and 57th Street Beach, so Kimpton got creative and threw together a package worthy of riding a few waves. Grab an overnight stay, free “parking” for surfboards at the hotel, $50 certificate at Chicago surf shop Windward Sports, transportation to a surfing beach and two “Surf’s Up” drinks in the hotel bar starting at $220 for two people. You can use the rate code surf1 when booking on Kimpton’s website.

We can’t promise you’ll walk away a professional surfer, but hey – you can certainly say you tried something new while you were in Chicago.

Ask Gadling: Getting the most (hotel) bang for your buck

We’ve talked a lot about hotel promotions and packages, but how do you choose what’s best for you and your budget? That’s the topic of this week’s question, from Cindy in San Antonio, who wants to book a nice hotel without paying for unwanted amenities.

“I want to go on vacation this year, but I’d also like to get the most bang for my buck. I don’t want to seem greedy, but I want more than just a hotel room and I don’t want to spend money on things I’m not going to take advantage of, like free water sports or spa gift credits. How do I get the most bang for my buck at hotels, without having to compromise my vacation?”

Gadling: Your question isn’t out of the ordinary and certainly isn’t greedy. It’s completely natural for you want to the most for your hard-earned cash, especially when you travel. I’m here to tell you it’s possible to travel in style, without breaking the bank. Here are a few tips before you book:

1. Think outside the box. Just because you’re familiar with some hotel brands doesn’t mean you should exclude others. Many people fall into the “I can’t afford that” or “It’s too basic” frame of mind without even checking out the hotels first. Hotels like Hyatt, Marriott and Wyndham have ‘upscale’ brands that act like resorts and offer different amenities and packages from their flagship hotels. In the same way, luxury hotels like the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons offer vacation packages that include everything from dinners to spa days to tours, and more. The cost for these add-ons is often less than what you would pay if you priced it out a la carte, and you get the service that luxe hotels are known for. Don’t shy away from boutique brands, either. Hotels like Kimpton’s and Affinia’s are smaller than big name hotels, but they offer the same amenities (sometimes more) and host special ‘theme’ packages depending on the time of year you travel and what you’re looking for, including family packages, girlfriend getaways and city tours.

2. Use loyalty points. If you’re a member of a hotel’s loyalty program, look to them first before booking. Hotels will cater to their loyalty members, even if you don’t have enough points for a free night. Just having a membership goes a long way these days (and the memberships are free!). If you’re not a member of any hotel loyalty programs, check with your credit card company or airline rewards programs. Credit card companies offer great travel deals that allow you to gain points when you book through them, and they also have promotions that are specific to them so you might find something that suits your tastes and isn’t offered on the hotel’s websites. The same logic applies to airline miles programs – airlines and hotels have teamed up to offer packages that include airfare and hotel stays, so it’s likely you can save money and stay at some great properties.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. If you find a hotel and package price that’s perfect, but the package offerings aren’t quite right, call their customer service line and ask for some re-shuffling. Tell the agent exactly what you like and don’t like about a package, and ask if they can accommodate you with another package for the same price, or throw in a few of the things you’re seeking. Many times, the hotel will sell you the package with all the inclusions, and give you the extras you’re seeking for free. Valet service or free parking, free WiFi, additional beds (which often come with a charge) and credits in either the restaurant, bar or spa are common requests that hotel’s often accommodate. Remember, this is the hospitality business – their job is to cater to the customer, so ask for what you want and you’ll be surprised at what you get!

Enjoy your vacation, Cindy, and remember: you work hard for your money, so make it work for you!

Inside the Hotel Palomar Chicago

Kimpton’s Hotel Palomar Chicago opened its 261-room art-themed hotel in March and we’ve been eager to take a look inside. My food-and-lifestyle writing friend Johnica Reed was recently in Chicago and I sent her on assignment to check out the new digs in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. Here’s what she found:

Guest rooms

The king-sized rooms are pleasantly decorated in blue and brown hues, complimented with bright accents in the carpet’s floral motifs. Each room has a classic Chicago picture on the wall, and comes complete with WiFi access, iHome docking stations, flat-screen TVs and honor bar service.

Living Room

The Palomar Chicago’s living room hosts its nightly wine service as way to help guests wind down from a windy day along Michigan Avenue. The hotel’s living room space is decorated in the same gold and brown hues used in the guest rooms. In addition to the wine service, the living room comes complete with a fireplace and library, and makes great use of space with its white chandeliers.

The Roof

The talking point of the hotel is the green roof, which helps promote Chicago’s city-wide eco-friendly initiative. The rooftop garden (said to be covered with grass and vegetation) wasn’t open last week but the deck and pool space was available to guests and we got a great look at the view.

A few steps from the pool and the entire skyline is at your fingertips. The view is quintessential Chicago, and looks to be a lovely spot for sipping cocktails on a hot summer night. Right now, the hotel is hosting a cocktail or continental breakfast promotion for $1 more on your room charge. Choose this promotion and you will receive:

  • Deluxe accommodations
  • A complimentary continental breakfast – or – a cocktail in the restaurant for each registered guest up to 2 room occupants per day.
  • Room rate is the Best Available Rate plus $1.00.

Not a bad way to spend a night (or next morning) in Chicago.

Hotel Palomar Chicago officially open to Windy City guests

Kimpton’s new Hotel Palomar Chicago welcomes its first guests today to the 261-room art-themed hotel.

The pièce de résistance of this 4-star-caliber hotel is the green roof, which helps promote Chicago’s city-wide eco-friendly initiative. The roof is covered with grass and vegetation and helps improve air quality, clean and retain rainwater, and helps promote Kimpton’s brand-wide EarthCare program.

Located in Chicago‘s River North district, the Hotel Palomar Chicago features an indoor rooftop pool, 23 suites on higher floors and like its sister property is a pet-friendly hotel.

To celebrate the launch of the new Windy City digs, the hotel is hosting a “Hot Sexy City” promotion good for weekend stays through April 28, 2010. Book a room Thursdays through Sundays and get overnight valet parking and two in-room signature cocktails for $139 per room, per night. (The cocktail, for those who need a little convincing is called the Chelsea, and consists of Death’s Door white whisky, pink port, basil and strawberry-allspice bitters.)

Kimpton takes the edge off tax season

‘Tis the season for taxation. We gather up our W-2s, sift through 1099s and try to figure out just how painful the experience is going to be for our wallets. Tax season isn’t the most pleasant of experiences for many, so Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants is hoping to take the sting out a little bit. With its “Sweet Tax Relief” deal, Kimpton will make sure tax time leaves you with an enjoyable taste in your mouth – for a change.

To start, participating Kimptons will pay your room tax for you, for stays during the entire month of April. And, your meal tax will be picked up when you throw down some grub at its restaurants. If you’ve ever taken a close look at your restauant receipt or hotel folio, you know just how substantial this savings can be. To sweeten the pot, so to speak, candy bars like “Payday,” “100 Grand” and “Sugar Daddy” will be provided, which you can munch on while waiting for your late checkout to come.

According to Niki Leondakis, chief operating officer of Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants, “Tax season can be a stressful time of year and this fun promotion is a great way for travelers to save a few dollars on the road and enjoy some sweet treats.”
