Shake it like a Tahitian

In a language that’s mostly all vowels, a bit of interpretive dance helps communicate one’s deepest thoughts and feelings. Sad? Lower your eyes. Fierce? Scowl and posture. Happy? Shake it, baby. Travelers have been awestruck by Tahitian dancers ever since they first landed on these dancing shores. The bearded missionaries of long ago secretly loved it and today’s MTV backup singers wanna steal these moves but ain’t got no rhythm.

Every two-bit hotel in Tahiti puts on a decent dinner dance show for the tourists, but when the natives start dancing for the natives, things get hot fast. I caught this little show at an official awards ceremony on a hot white sand beach on Bora Bora. Sit back and enjoy, and just ask yourself, can you shake it like a Tahitian? I didn’t think so.

One for the Road: MTV Roadtrips USA

Like yesterday’s pick, here’s another guidebook series that I’m not going to review because I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. Actually, Neil first told us all about this series when it was launched last fall. MTV’s travel guides first hit bookshelves last fall, published in partnership with Frommers. The latest title was released earlier this year: MTV Roadtrips U.S.A. is a detailed tribute to roadtripping across America, courtesy of the reality-tv-lovin’ music video generation.

This collection of road trips is organized by themes, with a slew of suggested itineraries: visits to wine festivals in Virginia, Bonnaroo in Tennessee, Jersey Shore excursions, a Vegas to Baja getaway and a Southern BBQ roadtrip are just some of the cruising suggestions offered in this team-written guide for trendy young travelers. Sounds like it is a hefty guide at 800+ pages, so you may just want to poke through it for ideas at the library or your favorite bookstore.

STA Travel is sharing the cast mates fan-tab and totally top-secret 10-day itinerary for the world to see and experience for their own. I’m sure this doesn’t really sound all that appealing to the older, more sophisticated non-MTV watchers out there, but it’s still a trip to Spain and the itinerary doesn’t look all that bad. Stops include Madrid, Seville, and Barcelona with packages starting at $605. Check out STA Travel for more details.
