Foods found when traveling that you have fallen in love with

A while ago, Gadling posted a question on our Twitter page asking people to name some foods that they discovered while traveling and now have a hard time living without.

Not surprisingly, the replies came in with votes for currywurst, Indian chai, exotic fruits and a variety of libations.

Here’s how some people answered our question. (Want to tell us a food you discovered while traveling and now can’t live without? Send you story here.)

Larry Bleiberg says, “Great question! Hard cider from UK. Taramasalata, Athens. Side note: Trader Joes started by selling stuff folks discovered traveling.”

Laura Byrne Paquet of Facing the Street says, “Believe it or not, I first got up the nerve to taste smoked salmon on trip to Scotland about a decade ago. Now I’m addicted.”
Nathan Midgley of Travel Weekly Blog says, “Currywurst. Classy, no? I also tried pure sulfer on White Island, NZ, but that wasn’t really a keeper.”

Alex H. of theycallmearex says, “In Taiwan it’s all about the fruits!–cherimoya, guava, ‘lien-au’, etc. Actually, I’ll try most any local foods in any country. Yum.”

Soultravelers3 says, ” We never had StickyToffeePudding, til we had it in our Spain village at 4 table restaurant by UK expats. Yum! We had it 1st nite back.”

NewWrldYankee says, “Beans on toast – sounds gross but can be perfect during exam time! And corn on pizza.”

Eva Holland says, “Fresh lime juice in KL. Real chai in India. Hand-pulled ales, ploughman’s lunches in UK. Of course, it’s never the same at home!”

Jessiev says, “NOT durian. Ha!”

Joodlenoodle says, “Tasted crystallized ginger candy at a temple outside Tokyo and now have to make my own because I can’t find the right kind anywhere!”

PAadventure says, “Most people have never heard of putting french fries on their sandwiches… until they go to Pittsburgh, PA and have a Primantis!”

TheWildPair says, “What foods have you learned about while traveling and can’t go without? Mangosteen! Fell in love with this fruit in Malaysia.

Gadling Twitters Jetblue’s T5

With all of this buzz that we’ve been hearing about the new Terminal 5 that JetBlue opened up in JFK this week, we just had to get down there and take a look.

So we sent one of our east coasters, Jerry Guo, out to check out the digs. He’ll be twittering his experience on Gadling’s feed where you can tune in, follow along, and salivate as Jerry checks out the sweet food court, marvels at the tall celings and hobknobs among the culture in the airport bars.

And ladies, ladies, please put your 8 x 10″ black and white glossies away. Mr. Guo will be busy absorbing his surroundings in a spongelike manner as soon as he sets foot in the building, so he won’t be able to sign any autographs for you. If you’d like your picture taken with Jerry, we’ll have a cardboard cutout of him at SXSW next year and you can snap a photo next to that.

Otherwise, you can stay tuned to the Gadling Twitter feed to keep up to snuff on Jerry’s thoughts of T5. He should be there around noon.

Gadling is on Twitter

“What are you doing?”

We at Gadling want to know about the little things that happen in your life, particularly those little things surrounding travel. We want to know if you’re packing for a four-wheeling trip to Utah, relaxing on the beach in Cancun, or stranded at the airport in New York. We’re curious to hear if your road trip to Colorado is going well, if you’re waiting for a train to Midway, or whether you just scored an awesome wooden carving from a vendor in Lusaka.

How can we do this? Follow Gadling on Twitter. Once you follow us, we’ll help you connect with other travelers, and with other people who love to think and talk about travel. We’ll also keep you up-to-date on breaking news, fill in the gaps on some of the travel news that can’t fit on our blog, and share all sorts of (short) travel tips there.

If you don’t know what Twitter is, watch this short tutorial, which explains it very clearly. If you do know what Twitter is, then what are you waiting for? Follow us!

TwittEarth: Watch tweets from around the world

I have to admit, at first I didn’t really understand Twitter. Microblogging? Who cares? But then I signed up for an account, connected with a few friends, and — like most everyone else using the service — became addicted. It really is a great way to stay up-do-date and connected with friends and family. Heck, Gadling even has a Twitter account, but we’re still working the kinks out of it so it’s pretty quiet now. If you’re still unsure of what Twitter is, watch this.

Anyway.

TwittEarth is a nifty little website I just found that displays recent tweets from around the world on a spinning globe, Google Earth style. It serves no other purpose than giving you a new way to look at the data, but it does a great job at that. So off you go — sign up for a Twitter account and microblog away, or just stare at the pretty spinning globe.
