Ask Gadling: Getting the most (hotel) bang for your buck

We’ve talked a lot about hotel promotions and packages, but how do you choose what’s best for you and your budget? That’s the topic of this week’s question, from Cindy in San Antonio, who wants to book a nice hotel without paying for unwanted amenities.

“I want to go on vacation this year, but I’d also like to get the most bang for my buck. I don’t want to seem greedy, but I want more than just a hotel room and I don’t want to spend money on things I’m not going to take advantage of, like free water sports or spa gift credits. How do I get the most bang for my buck at hotels, without having to compromise my vacation?”

Gadling: Your question isn’t out of the ordinary and certainly isn’t greedy. It’s completely natural for you want to the most for your hard-earned cash, especially when you travel. I’m here to tell you it’s possible to travel in style, without breaking the bank. Here are a few tips before you book:

1. Think outside the box. Just because you’re familiar with some hotel brands doesn’t mean you should exclude others. Many people fall into the “I can’t afford that” or “It’s too basic” frame of mind without even checking out the hotels first. Hotels like Hyatt, Marriott and Wyndham have ‘upscale’ brands that act like resorts and offer different amenities and packages from their flagship hotels. In the same way, luxury hotels like the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons offer vacation packages that include everything from dinners to spa days to tours, and more. The cost for these add-ons is often less than what you would pay if you priced it out a la carte, and you get the service that luxe hotels are known for. Don’t shy away from boutique brands, either. Hotels like Kimpton’s and Affinia’s are smaller than big name hotels, but they offer the same amenities (sometimes more) and host special ‘theme’ packages depending on the time of year you travel and what you’re looking for, including family packages, girlfriend getaways and city tours.

2. Use loyalty points. If you’re a member of a hotel’s loyalty program, look to them first before booking. Hotels will cater to their loyalty members, even if you don’t have enough points for a free night. Just having a membership goes a long way these days (and the memberships are free!). If you’re not a member of any hotel loyalty programs, check with your credit card company or airline rewards programs. Credit card companies offer great travel deals that allow you to gain points when you book through them, and they also have promotions that are specific to them so you might find something that suits your tastes and isn’t offered on the hotel’s websites. The same logic applies to airline miles programs – airlines and hotels have teamed up to offer packages that include airfare and hotel stays, so it’s likely you can save money and stay at some great properties.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. If you find a hotel and package price that’s perfect, but the package offerings aren’t quite right, call their customer service line and ask for some re-shuffling. Tell the agent exactly what you like and don’t like about a package, and ask if they can accommodate you with another package for the same price, or throw in a few of the things you’re seeking. Many times, the hotel will sell you the package with all the inclusions, and give you the extras you’re seeking for free. Valet service or free parking, free WiFi, additional beds (which often come with a charge) and credits in either the restaurant, bar or spa are common requests that hotel’s often accommodate. Remember, this is the hospitality business – their job is to cater to the customer, so ask for what you want and you’ll be surprised at what you get!

Enjoy your vacation, Cindy, and remember: you work hard for your money, so make it work for you!

Jack Bauer’s back! Affinia Hotels NYC hosting 24-hour $24 room giveaway

The date: Jan. 17

(cue the heart-thumping, blood-pressure rising music)

Affinia Hotels in New York is feeling the “24” fever and hosting a giveaway via their Twitter account. Jack Bauer (played by Kiefer Sutherland, for those of you living under the rock that Jack built) is bringing his crime-solving, action-packed intense 24-hours to the streets of New York City on Jan. 17, and Affinia Hotels is helping fans celebrate the highly anticipated return of 24’s eighth season with a giveaway on its @affiniahotels Twitter page.

If you’re not on Twitter, you’re missing out on the action. To be eligible, participants must:

– Follow @affiniahotels on Twitter
– Post the contest message “Jack is back! Celebrate NYC debut of 24 w/ a $24 Affinia Shelburne stay. Follow @affiniahotels & RT this msg 2 enter: www.affinia.com/24” between 12pm EST on Wednesday, January 13 and 12pm EST on Thursday, January 14.

After the 24-hour contest period, Affinia Shelburne’s General Manager David McManus will pick a winner at random, who will then be announced on the hotel’s Twitter page on Thursday, January 14.

But as anyone who watches “24” knows, there’s always something more to the story… and this hotel giveaway is no exception. The Affinia reps just emailed me a note letting me know they’re throwing in an extra bonus: everyone who enters the contest will receive a special link on Thursday afternoon that offers them the $24 rate for that Sunday, January 17 night only. There will be 24 rooms available for that rate, and everyone will have access to the hotel’s viewing party.

The premier will air live in the hotel’s lobby lounge, located at 303 Lexington Avenue, and attendees can enter a drawing to win one grand prize of the $24 overnight rate at Affinia Shelburne, plus additional 24 Season 1-7 DVD giveaways. Official contest rules and more information about the on-site party are available by visiting www.affinia.com/24.

Washington DC to become gay marriage destination

A new bill passed by the Washington, D.C. city council is already getting the hotel community excited over the possibilities. When Mayor Adrian Fenty signs it into law, gay marriage will be legal in our nation’s capital. For the hotel industry, that means a larger market from which to draw wedding clients and pump up some revenue in what has been a dismal market for the travel and hospitality industry.

It looks like March is the earliest the law could take effect. Even though it’s still a few months away, that isn’t nearly enough time to plan a wedding! But, the deals are nonetheless starting to pop up. The Affinia Liaison Capitol Hill is celebrating by extending its Pride Package rates for a year, to December 31, 2010. The rates start at $199 a night and include daily breakfast for two at Art and Soul restaurant and champagne cocktails for two from ArtBar. And, for each package booked, the hotel is going to donate $10 to White Knot for Equality, a non-profit that’s working for equal rights for the gay and lesbian community.

Remember to use the code PRIDE when you book your room!

Cyber Monday: not just for retailers any more

After four days off, the world will slide behind its desks again on Monday morning. They’ll try to get back into the swing of work life, but it won’t be immediate. So, as they ease back into productivity, many will push into the shopping world they dodged three days earlier on Black Friday. The hotels will be waiting for them, with more than 60 of them pushing deals to try to get in on the holiday shopping action.

Around 69 million people are expected to jump into the Cyber Monday fray, with workers aged 18 to 24 seen as the most likely to shop at work. Overall, 54 percent of people with internet access at work will start to take care of their holiday season obligations on Monday.

According to a Shop.org survey, 87 percent of the retailers surveyed plan to get deals out in front of online consumers this holiday season, up a tad from last year’s 83 percent. So, it’ll be tough for the hotels to stand out, but this won’t keep them from trying.

Fifty of Starwood‘s resorts will be offering deals during a three-day sale that starts on Monday, with discounts of up to 45 percent. But, you’ll need to travel between the beginning of January and the end of April. Seven Affinia Hotels properties are offering 15% off a 2010 stay at properties in New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C. The James Hotel in Chicago is offering a 100% bonus on gift cards purchased.

Midnight Rates for last minute guests in NYC

Here’s an interesting idea from the folks at The Affinia Manhattan: Cheaper rates late at night.

NYC commuters know that it’s sometimes hard to wrench yourself out of the city in time for that last train, and sometimes, well, you’re just too tired to make the trip; or maybe you’ve had a bit to drink and you’d rather not drive.

Head over to The Affinia, conveniently located right across from Madison Square Garden and close to both Penn Station and Times Square. They’re currently offering special rates for rooms booked after 10:00 PM from just $159.00. That’s $100 off the regular price — and what we like about it is that it’s fair. Why should you pay the same as a guest who checked in at 3 and took advantage of all the hotel’s amenities when you just need a place to crash?

Just show up late at The Affinia Manahttan (371 Seventh Avenue) and ask for the Midnight Rates deal — go in on it with whichever buddy kept you out so late for extra savings.
