Annual “DOTTY” awards honor traveling fools

Those crazy kids at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) have released the winners of their annual DOTTY awards. Since 2008, the government travel industry watchdog has exhibited a most uncharacteristic sense of humor for a federal agency. Honorees are those travelers who have displayed the most moronic behavior. This year, the awards were issued just as DOT put new regulations into effect to provide increased security for travelers. Unfortunately, they can’t provide increased IQ, as well.

Ryanair wants its winnings: One journalist’s apartment

What happens when one UK journalist casually bets her apartment on the assumption that no one likes Ryanair? Ryanair comes through with a customer satisfaction letter, and demands possession of her apartment.

The Telegraph journalist Bryony Gordon wagered her London flat against anyone who could prove that Ryanair passengers enjoyed their flights. In the article (dated April 7) in the UK daily, Bryony said, “you never hear anybody casually mention that they have just flown with Ryanair, and that they really enjoyed it. I am willing to bet my flat and its contents that nobody has ever said the words “Ryanair”, “marvellous” and “service” in the same sentence.”

Well, you might not have heard those words, Bryony, but Ryanair has, and they want their winnings! Ryanair produced a small selection of customer satisfaction letters and even went to so far as to publish the letters on their website. Now, the airline is seeking its reward.

“Ryanair has provided Bryony with the details of these web-pages and is now seeking the keys to her apartment.” Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said. McNamara went on to say that Ryanair is the world’s “favorite airline” and “provides the best on-time, baggage and flight completion performance of any major European airline, while also offering Europe’s guaranteed lowest fares.”

We’re not sure exactly how this one is going to play out, but the smart move would be for Bryony to bet double-or-nothing her next flight with Ryanair is a good one. Moral of this story: If you’re going to place bets, be absolutely certain you’re going to win.

The JetBlue birthday party continues in Boston with free airline tickets

To celebrate their 10th birthday, JetBlue is city-hopping and handing out free tickets to travelers. The catch: you have to find JetBlue, and when you do, you need to bring a present.

Last month the party took hold of Manhattan, and handed out free tickets to New York City followers who found the JetBlue freebies on the street. On today’s JetBlue blog, the airline said it will be galavanting around Beantown handing out free flights to a few lucky people.

The promotion is on Twitter under the hashtag: #JB10BOS and you’ll have to bring JetBlue a little birthday surprise in order to get your free tickets. As of 11:00 a.m. EST, JetBlue was hanging out in Boston’s City Hall.

We suggest you stop off for some pastries in the North End to sweeten the pot for the JetBlue giveaway.

Virgin America, VAustralia, Virgin Blue offer frequent flyer partnership points

I love when family members play well together.

News from the Virgin camp: flyers on any of the carriers three brands – Virgin America, VAustralia and Virgin Blue – will have the option to earn points on any of the three loyalty programs.

“Travelers around the world seek out Virgin airlines for their unrivalled value, brilliant service and innovative amenities, and we’re pleased to partner with Virgin Blue and V Australia to allow our loyal guests to earn Virgin frequent flyer credits wherever they are flying– in the U.S., Asia Pacific or Australia,” said Virgin America President and Chief Executive Officer David Cush, in a press release provided by Virgin America.

Here’s how it works: If you’re a VAustralia or Virgin Blue Velocity member, you can earn points in your Velocity account by flying any of the three carriers. Likewise, if you’re a Virgin America Elevate member, you’ll earn Elevate points when you fly any of the three brands.

Elevate redemption levels will start at 40,000 points for flights on V Australia and 6,000 points for flights on Virgin Blue later this year.
