Photo of the Day: Workers on a bench

The best photography captures candid moments – those split seconds between fantasy and reality when our subjects’ guard comes down and we get a glimpse into their true nature. That’s why I liked today’s photo by Flickr user t3mujin – his shot of workers relaxing on a bench in the Burmese city of Yangon feels like one of those candid moments. I love how each man’s body language is slightly unique yet quite similar – the two on the ends with their knees up act almost like “bookends” to the men in the middle with both their legs down.

People love to brag about their ambitious itineraries when traveling. They’re going to see umpteen temples, take so many overnight trains and eat at every street vendor. That’s all well and good, but I enjoy not feeling rushed when I’m traveling. I also enjoy benches. Benches are your environment’s way of saying, “Hey, now would be a good time to chill out for a bit.”

This photo by Flickr user snowjumpr taken in Varenna, Italy shows what, to me, looks like a pretty sweet way to spend a day. A newspaper, a calm body of water and a bench. Heck, I even like the socks.

The best way to see a new place is to walk around. Wake up early, hit the streets and just wander. Through markets, up hills to scenic lookouts and through tiny neighborhoods that allow you to really see how people live. But all of that shopping, wandering, strolling and sightseeing can really wreak havoc on your feet. Sometimes you just need to sit your ass down, stay still for a while and let everyone else do the walking while you simply watch. That’s why, when you finally see a bench, it’s like a mirage in the desert. This photo by Flickr user flicts makes me so happy. There’s nothing like a well-placed bench after a day of being dragged around to shops, ruins and unforgiving cobblestone streets. Except for maybe a well-timed churro.
