Photo of the day: Rabat, Morocco

Traveling isn’t just about seeing beautiful sights. It’s about experiencing culture. The little day-to-day activities we witness while away from home can be the most touching. This image of boys in the water in Rabat, Morocco transported me a bit. I heard the water splashing, the boys yelling, and the sounds from the street. I stared at the small dot of the man sitting on the rocks in the background; I wondered how long he’d been meditating there at the time this photo was taken.

A sudden realization ended my reverie: common denominators like these, like children playing in the water, drive home the fact that no matter where we go, people are more or less the same at their core.

Photo of the Day: Three friends in El Salvador

No matter where you go in the world, some things are universal. It’s those things that help keep us grounded and comfortable no matter how far from home we may be. For me, I always cherish the smiles on kids’ faces. Kids are almost the same everywhere in the world. Boys are rambunctious and girls like to whisper and giggle. That’s why, even on the streets of El Salvador, you can find comfort in the smiles of two kids just walking by.

What I love even more about this photo from Gadling’s own Stephen Greenwood is that it adds yet another constant to the mix: a puppy. Puppies are cute no matter where you go.

For more of Stephen’s excellent photography, check out his Flickr page here.

Taken any photos kids with dogs? Or maybe just some fantastic pictures of the people, places and things you’ve encountered on your travels? Why not add them to our Gadling group on Flickr? We might just pick one of yours as our Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day (2.16.10)

Today’s breathtaking Photo of the Day was shot near Nasir, Sudan by photographer Austin Mann. In the photograph’s caption, Mann explains that “the wing of this plane that crashed during the war in ’98 has now turned into a diving board for young boys.” A beautifully captured and composed frame that also tells a powerful story.

Nasir is a southern Sudanese town on the Sobat River (near the Ethiopian border). During Sudan’s second North-South civil war, the town served as the base for a powerful splinter faction of the SPLA, the southern guerrilla army that fought the North in the civil war.

If you want to see more, Mann has a wide series of travel shots that are definitely worth checking out. Do you have photos that tell a great story? Submit them to our Flickr Pool and they might be featured as the Photo of the Day!

The earth-toned colors and textures first caught my attention in this photo snapped in Panama by captaincartography. They remind me of the Painted Desert in Arizona and the Badlands in South Dakota. Then there are these fabulous boys intent on their dog. Such a simple scene, but captivating.

If you have a shot of a scene that caught your interest in your travels, send it our way at Gadling’s Flickr Photo Pool. It might be picked as a Photo of the Day.
