Obama’s blockhead double takes oath in CA

While President Barack Obama took the oath of office in Washington, D.C., his counterpart did the same in Carlsbad, CA. While the west coast ceremony was a bit rough around the edges, the blockhead appears to have done just fine.

LEGOLAND® California is celebrating our new president with a new display, running until Memorial Day, May 25, 2009. Visitors to this theme park can enjoy the ascension of the 44th president of the United States on the steps of the Capitol in Miniland U.S.A.

The entire effort includes block depictions of Obama and his family, Vice President Joseph Biden and his wife Jill and former presidents and vice presidents George Bush (senior and junior), Dick Cheney and their spouses. In all, more than a thousand “people” were erected to show the inauguration. Most of the figures stand four inches high. In the audience, you’ll find some famous spectators, including Senator Dianne Feinstein, Aretha Franklin and Yo Yo Ma. The U.S. Marine Corps Band and San Francisco Boys Chorus are in attendance as well.

The LEGOLAND inauguration is part of a larger exhibition comprised of more than 22 million LEGO bricks that renders major cities such as New York, Las Vegas and San Francisco in this unique art form.

For a person who has never been too fond of Southern California, I’ve recently found myself drawn to the region. Perhaps it’s because the weather is good — or maybe it’s because the girls are so much prettier and because I don’t have to think of home.

Either the way, in my last three visits to the area I’ve lingered longer every time. On Saturday, I took an early ride up the coast line from Marina Del Ray up past the Santa Monica Pier to visit an Ultimate Frisbee tournament. Afterwards in Venice Beach, where this photo was taken, I had breakfast on Washington. At home, the high temperature on Saturday was 12°.

mce323‘s picture of Venice reminds me of the parts of the city that I really love, the boutiques along the PCH, the cliffs in Malibu and the California style burritos. It makes me almost want to move to SoCal. Almost.

There is an impressionistic, dreamy quality about jrodjmanjr’s shot of the ice rink at Union Square in San Francisco. The two people in front, however, draw one onto the ice. Can’t you feel the movement of the foot pushing out, the swing of the red sweatered arm and the glide forward?

The fact that they are anonymous makes them like anyone and everyone you’ve ever seen moving in and out of the shadows of an outdoor skating rink at night. The back lit glow is also wonderful.

The Santa Ana winds picked up this week, swirling over Southern California and bringing unnaturally warm temperatures for this time of the year. It’s a great time for a business trip from the snowy grips of the Midwest.

Matteo.Mazzoni‘s photo of this lonely traveler on the California beach echoes some of my experiences this week, as I wandered around North Park, Mission Beach and the Gaslamp, absorbing the city in sandals and a t-shirt. Tomorrow it will be too early to leave.

Plan for sin, seven ideas

You may not remember the “seven deadly sins,” but you’ve probably lived a healthy portion of them. Well, I have, and I’m sure I’m not alone. Jean Tang over at CNN.com has come up with a few ideas to help you live your forbidden fantasy. So, if you’re into envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride, sloth or wrath, there’s a destination that will cater to your basest of desires.

Crave a step up in society (envy) as a helicopter shepherds you above the opulent homes of the wealthy Los Angeles ‘burbs, and gaze upon the celeb digs that you’ll never call home. Or, fill your stomach to the point of bursting (gluttony) on an 18 lb. hamburger at Bubi’s in Windsor, Ontario.

A few others:

  • Greed: ogle some of the largest private collections of Renoir, Matisse and Cezanne in the world at the Barnes Foundation in Merion, PA (near Philly)
  • Pride: recreate your body at the affordable Heartland Spa in Gilman, IL; two nights for two peopl start below $800
  • Sloth: Define your own movie marathon at The Roxbury in the Catskills from a 400-disk collection, and then do nothing but watch
  • Wrath: Kick ass and take names on the mean San Francisco streats with a bout of Muay Thai (Thai boxing) at Fairtex Muay Thai Fitness
  • Lust: CNN sends you to the obvious: Hedonism; I won’t bore you with the details

[Thanks, CNN, for helping us all indulge]
