Photo Of The Day: Moulin Rouge At Night

Today’s photo, by Flickr user Rob_Sanderson, is of one of the more (in)famous tourist landmarks in Paris: the Moulin Rouge. I love the long shutter exposure of Rob’s shot, which brings out the warm neon’s fiery reds, twinkling street lamplights and a whirling blur from of the club’s iconic windmill. The image gives off a feeling of wonderful nighttime energy and hijinks to come.

Photo of the Day – Lisbon at dusk

The city of Lisbon is dominated by its hills. It can make getting around this Portuguese capital an interesting experience (tip: make sure to try out one of the city’s elevators). But rest assured, once you make it to the top, you’ll be treated to some of Europe’s most amazing views. Today’s photo, by Flickr user t3mujin, offers a typical example, taken at dusk. I love the warm glow of the city’s street lights, coming to life as the day slowly fades to dusk, Lisbon’s picturesque harbor visible off in the distance.

Photography isn’t just about clicking a shot based on what’s in your viewfinder. Elements like lighting, framing and timing all matter when you’re hoping to capture that perfect shot. Just take a look at Flickr user andykee’s image of these four lake houses in Delaware for proof. Andy turned what could have otherwise been a ho-hum shot at the beach into a photo loaded with atmosphere. The muted gray colors, blurry reflections and ample space at the top and bottom suggest the structures are floating on air – mysterious ghost houses shrouded in mystery and intrigue.

Light and shadow are the photographer’s secret weapons, something artfully demonstrated in this image from Flickr user nabil.s. Nabil took this shot of the Andean Mountains in Peru, darkened by eerie clouds and enveloped by the oncoming dusk. I love the tiny plot of brightly-lit mountain in the background. It looks like it’s about to be swallowed by an approaching monster.

As you might have heard, the Gadling team will be getting together in Chicago this coming weekend. It only seems appropriate then for me to pick a Chicago photo like this one from frequent Gadling photo contributor mce323. Chicago is a city of fantastic architecture, with groundbreaking works from masters like Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. The twin towers at Marina City are yet another iconic Chicago architectural landmark. I love the checkerboard of glowing lights illuminating the various balconies, contrasted nicely with the encroaching black of night.
