Butterflies are some of nature’s most delicate fluttering creatures. So when they are captured with wings fully spread, relaxing on the soft pink petals of a flower and posing for a passing photographer in the Ecuadorian Amazon they must also be granted a moment of fame on Gadling. This POTD was taken by fiznatty and several other beautiful butterflies and creepy crawlers from Ecuador can be found in the Gadling Flickr pool.

Tonight I’m going with a shot from my own photo pool to serve as a simple and small reminder on the upcoming Historic Garden Week all across the state of Virginia happening April 21-28, 2007. Not that I actually mentioned it before, but for those truly interested this is my cluing you in. This particular flower shot comes from the Norfolk Botanical Gardens where I paraded around the property slightly disappointed in the flower selection and the gray storm clouds looming over that day. While trying to make it through the entire outdoor Norfolk attraction without getting wet I managed to miss the name of this pretty flower. Anyone out there with a green thumb or fancy for flowers care to share the name?

The Human Flower Project

Reading the title above has probably triggered some of you to conjure scenes from the film Little Shop of Horrors or some other dynamic piece of cinema where flowers and plants are seen quite often like in Pane e Tulipani or even American Beauty. However, this is one for those who truly love smelling the bed of roses be it through film or real-life experiences. I’ll describe the site in short as they have nicely done it on their own: The Human Flower Project is an international group, photo album and discussion on how people live through flowers. Live through flowers?

The blog, which I stumbled upon for the first time is really an experience offering a perspective of life in countries as far as Cuba and Uganda and focusing on issues such as art, medicine, society, politics, religion and commerce through flowers. For instance, did you know that the state flower of Texas, the Texas bluebonnet was altered about 25 years ago to bloom in maroon and white, an idea that came about from obsessed Texas A&M folk? Wonder how life is affected by those working in Uganda’s flower biz or why the Ladies in White from Cuba demonstrate holding gladiolus? Whether these things ever ran across your mind or not I’d have to say the Human Flower Project is something definitely worth a glance. Check out shots from Vietnam, Colombia and France in their photo gallery.

Since we’ve committed the day to helping you get your act together for the big V-day next week, I went in search for a friendly photo reminder of what you could get your sweet. The idea is simple: flowers. This photo was captured by londonsir well after purchasing hours in London. London Flowers is the name of the shop window in question and as one might guess love is the flowers. It’s all about the flowers, but if it were up to me I’d prefer a trip to the London Flowers shop for a first-hand look at the window display. That being said I guess I’m just greedy.

Anyhow, great job londonsir for dropping this lovely shot into your Flickr photo stream.

The further we slip away into winter I can’t help wanting to migrate to the same places where butterflies land on sweet beautiful flowers. Sure this shot comes from my own collection of flicks taken in Omaha’s botanical gardens during the very early stages of fall, but it seems I couldn’t find a fluttering butterfly these days to save my life. Luckily I’ll have this shot to help pass the time until spring and summer arrive once more or until I see more cheery winter land pictures in the Gadling Flickr pool.
