Mobile Phone Use While Flying: Not All That Popular Says Survey

Just when those who would like to use their mobile phone in the air get a break, a new survey says most travelers would prefer that they keep it turned off.

Not long ago, Virgin Atlantic announced it would allow mobile phone calls during flights on its London to New York route. Calls made will cost £1 a minute and a text will be 20 pence, much more than on the ground but worth it to those who need uninterrupted communications ability.

But a new survey from flight comparison site Skyscanner has revealed 86 percent of those surveyed said it would be “annoying to listen to other people’s conversations” reports Caribbean News Digital.

“In a world where we are now almost always ‘on call,’ it seems people don’t want to say good-bye to their last sanctuary of non-connectivity,” says Sam Baldwin, Skyscanner Travel Editor. “Flying allows us to switch off for a few hours, both from our own calls, and other people’s.”

Even those who like the idea of using their mobile phone in the air are not all that excited about it. Only 1 percent of respondents said they would actually pay more to fly with an airline that offered mobile call ability – surely not enough to get airlines in the mood to offer it.
The Skyscanner survey also revealed 48 percent said they would send texts, 35 percent said they would surf the web, 10 percent would send email, but only 6 percent would actually make and take calls.

For These Ladies, Paragliders Offered The Ultimate View Of Iceland. (Video)

Paragliding pilots have the ultimate perch to get out and see the world. For two Icelandic women, a planned camping trip to the highlands of their country turned into one of the most mesmerizing videos I’ve come across.

In July 2011 two girls borrowed a 4×4, filled it with camping gear and paragliders and drove up to the Highlands of Iceland.

They experienced a new side of their own country, found some extreme flying spots and quaint people, learned how to drive across rivers, up mountains and how to read maps.

4 weeks later, having killed the vehicle, they returned and made this film:

I can think of no better excuse to travel than to take up paragliding and meet other pilots around the world. In fact, I plan to do just that. Stay tuned.

Want to learn to really fly? If you live in the U.S. look up a paragliding school close to you. It’s less expensive than you think.

Video of the Day: flying like a bird

We all want to fly. We have all wanted to since we were children who realized that humans do not fly and birds do. Today’s video of the day features Dutch engineer Jamo Smeets successfully flying like a bird. Our concept of travel, and the related transportation necessary, is basically based on the bird. Humans aren’t born with wings so we invented the airplane. Because of the airplane we have modern day travel. But what if we could all fly ourselves? Granted, this video demonstrates a type of flying that couldn’t yet carry us far distances but maybe one day this technology will evolve. Smeets developed this project for eight months prior to testing the technology at a park in The Hague on March 18, 2012. Check it out.

Flying a dream: Urban Side

In this flying video we see Jean-Baptiste Chandelier who has been a paraglidiing pilot since 2004 and wants to inspire us all.

“My goal is to share my paragliding universe with my videos, for make everyone dream of flying,” says Chandelier on his website.

Specializing in acro flight, Chandelier flys through Peru, France and Chile using a variety of aero-acrobatic maneuvers and stunt flying, taking advantage of thermal properties of air by bodies of water, beaches, mountains and urban city areas.

“I am happy to present you a video really important for me, the Urban Side. In this video i flight on some really interresting places, and i play with the people. I hope the people inside and out of the paragliding world will like it and share it.”

Video of the Day: Flying People in New York City

Imagine if you could fly. Not in an airplane or a helicopter. I mean, you could fly like Superman. How amazing would it be to soar through cities and observe everyone from above. Well, imagine looking up and seeing three people flying around New York City. That’s what must have happened when people saw these human-shaped remote control airplanes circling around New York. It looks like it might just be a promotional video for the new film Chronicle, but that doesn’t make it any less awesome. Time to stare out there window and wish for some superpowers.
