Justin Glow and Rolf Potts embark on round the world trip — with no bags

Two of our favorite people in the world, Gadling editor-at-large Justin Glow and travel writer and personality Rolf Potts are teaming up on a wild project starting this week, traveling around the entire planet with absolutely no baggage.

The journey begins this morning on a flight between Kansas and New York City, where the team will be spending two days prior to their departure to London, Paris, Morocco, Cairo, Johannesburg, Bangkok, Singapore, Queenstown and Auckland, to name a few places, all with nothing more than the gear loaded in their SCOTTeVEST clothing and various and sundry camera equipment.

“Why?” you might ask? It’s partially to show the ease and fluidity of travel when unburdened (figuratively and literally) by luggage and it’s also a challenge. A challenge about making compromises on the road, pushing their gear to the limits and keeping cool while traversing the planet in one set of britches.

Rolf will be the pointman for the operation, and you’ll be able to see dispatches from his sexy gourd in both video and words every day over at rtwblog.com. Justin, the (no less sexy) camera and logistics man will deal with all things technical and with getting the dispatches updated. Along the way, they may even have a few visitors swing through.

Keep an eye out for updates as the weeks pass by and try to contain your jealousy. It sounds like a fantastic trip.

Photo of the Day (09.23.08)

Today’s Photo of the Day is a shout out to Justin Glow (and maybe to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot), the late editor of Gadling who recently moved to Chicago for work higher up in the blog food chain. As we catfish bottom feed the travel blog world, Justin sits upon his mighty throne in Chicago, peering down silently as a king among peasants. Helloooooo up there, Justin Glow! Helloooo!

Flickr user mce323 shot this photo at the base of the Marina City towers in downtown Chicago — thankfully not where Justin lives. Nice shot mce323.

Have any cool photos you’d like to share with the world? Add them to the Gadling Pool on Flickr, and it might be chosen as our Photo of the Day.

Gadling Delivers an Ohioan a Dutch Delight

I ran into Greg Phelps last night. He’s the art car friend of mine based in Columbus, Ohio who gave me the heads up about the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft and the art car event weekend in Louisville that took place there the beginning of August. He just got back from traveling in the Netherlands.

“Thanks for pointing me towards that Web site,” he said. (Enthusiastically, I might add.) “When I went to the Netherlands, I read all the posts. That crane hotel was the best place I have ever stayed.” The Web site, of course, is Gadling.

Turns out, Greg read Justin’s post “Get High in the Netherlands” about the luxury hotel inside a crane that is just big enough for two people. When he got to the Netherlands he followed through on the travel tip about this unique place to bed down for the night. Greg loved the hotel and mentioned making the crane move just the way it’s described in the post..

It was neat to find out that talk around a punch bowl pays off. I mentioned Gadling to Greg when I ran into him at an art exhibit, poetry reading for mutal friends of ours. He said he was going to the Netherlands to visit his girlfriend’s family. I said, “Hey, you ought to check out Gadling’s Netherland’s posts.” We also made the car art connection since I had just written an art car post thanks to a tip from Marilyn Terrell who often passes on to Gadling gems of interest. As I wrote before, Greg’s art car ended up last year in the event Marilyn tossed to us in an email. Small world.

*This photo is one of Greg’s from his trip. I chose this one since it sure looks like Holland to me. Look for a later post on his art bike which was part of his Netherlands experience.
