Video of the day: The Mountain, El Teide, Spain

This video by Terje Sorgjerd, called “The Mountain”, came into my Tumblr feed yesterday. I’ve watched it several times since that first breathtaking viewing and I’m still in awe. This time lapse video was filmed on El Teide–Spain‘s highest mountain. The mountain is reportedly one of the best places in the world to view the stars and the Teide Observatories call the mountain home.

The video was shot between April 4th-11th, 2011. Sorgjerd is a landscape photographer from Norway and, according the video’s Vimeo description, didn’t spend much time sleeping during this week-long shoot. With stunning views of the stars, the trees, and even a sandstorm that rolled through during the shoot, watching this video is an easy way to brighten your day in just a few minutes.

Sunsets are a common staple of the travel photo album. We tend to associate them with palm-tree-lined beaches, desert landscapes, and misty mountains. Yet this photo by Flickr user jameskadamson has nary a cactus or foothill in sight. Taken in New York City, it’s a beautiful perspective on the building’s architecture and the photographer’s favorite time of day. Want more sunsets? Congratulations to Flickr user twoeightnine on this absolutely stunning shot of the Grand Canyon. From the dramatic ridges and crevices of the canyon, each crisply outlined by shadow, to the fluffy white clouds drifting on a brilliant blue sky, there’s plenty of great visual intrigue to move your eye around the photo. Wondering how to take your own Ansel Adams-worthy masterpiece like this one? First start by picking the right time of day. Typically the early morning and just before sunset are best – you’ll get better shadows which add depth to your subject. Then when you’re home from your trip, don’t be afraid to edit the shot in a program like Photoshop, which will help you brighten up the colors. Don’t think of it as cheating – you’re simply making your photo look its best!

Buy seeds during your travels – Souvenir tip

If you love gardening, it’s fun to purchase seeds of flowering plants from distant lands to add uncommon beauty and interest to your landscape. If the plant blooms, you’ll get loads of compliments or questions, and that allows you to share the memories of your travels.

Try to purchase seeds that closely match your climate or gardening zone, but many times plants will flower in your area during a different season that closely matches their native land.

Pro tip: You can also grow them indoors or in your greenhouse. Harvest seeds from plants for the following year and to share with friends.
