Daily Pampering: Soulful serenading in the Swiss Alps

What’s more romantic than a hot summer evening and the smooth sounds of Foreigner? (Cue the high school flashbacks) Outdoor music fans (and children of the 1980s and 1990s) prepare to flock to the Swiss Alps for the “Live at Sunset” concert.

If your summer travels involves a trip to Europe, you might want to stopover in Zurich for this music event.

Nestled amongst the Swiss Alps and Lake Zurich, the city comes alive at the “Live at Sunset” concert from July 14 – 25, hosted at the Dolder Sports ice rink. Tori Amos, Foreigner, John Fogarty, A-Ha, and many more, will be on hand to serenade you amid the stunning landscape.

No concert package is complete without a place to stay. The historic Dolder Grand resort is the host of the Live at Sunset festival, and is offering a special package including a three-course pre-concert dinner and tickets to the concert of your choice, along with one night accommodation and breakfast at the Garden Restaurant from 980 CHF (approximately $837 USD).

Aloft Hotels seeks next big music act

Now that American Idol has ended what will aspiring singers do? Never fear superstars, Aloft Hotels has you covered (if you can sing).

Aloft is launching “Project Aloft Star” in an effort to find the next great musical artist.

Project Aloft Star, which kicks off June 7, will be a virtual battle of the bands with one winner kicking off the main stage at “Live In The Vineyard” in November alongside bonafide stars including Lily Allen, Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat and Macy Gray. Additionally, Aloft will send the winning artist or band on a tour of Aloft hotels throughout the United States.

The contest will take place on Facebook and the top three bands will be chosen based on a combination of votes from Facebook fans, Aloft guests, and Live In the Vineyard artists. Think you have what it takes to rock the hotel world? Sign up on Aloft’s Facebook fan page and submit a video of an original acoustic performance. The first round of voting will take place during the submission period, from June 7 to July 31. After the top three vote-getters are determined, a second round of votes will happen from August 10 to September 10. The final winning act will then be announced on September 15, and will go on to play at the “Live in the Vineyard” concert the weekend of November 13.

Aloft is the 2010 presenting sponsor for Live in the Vineyard, which takes place in California’s Napa Valley every April and November. Before you dismiss the event as an amateur karaoke night, take another look: performers include the likes of Melissa Etheridge, Train, Tonic and VV Brown.

Beyoncé’s Pimpin’ Private Tour Jet

What? You think Beyoncé has her own special private airplane with black velvet seat cushions and a bedazzled fuselage all covered in blingetty-bling (with a ring on it) and with bottles of Vitamin Water lined up like a rainbow in her mirrored mini-fridge? Well, she doesn’t. No doubt, girlfriend could afford it, but being the smart, sensible artist that she is, Beyoncé just chartered a plane from OpenSkies, the transatlantic all-business-class airline that flies nonstop between Washington, DC, New York City, and Paris.

Beyoncé and her entourage chartered the plane in February 2010 for the two-week South American leg of her recent “I AM… SASHA FIERCE” tour, beginning with a week of show dates in Brazil, followed by appearances in Argentina, Chile, Peru and finishing off with a last-stop carnival hurrah in Trinidad capital Port-of-Spain on February 18th. The Boeing 757-200 charter jet that carried her from gig to gig is compact but with long-range capacity and lots of luggage space for all those crazy stage sets and costume changes. The all-business-class layout offers two cabins, one with 24 BIZ BEDS (seats that convert into a 180° fully flat bed) and another 40 BIZ SEATS (which recline only to 140°). Of course, Beyoncé slept up front in one of the BIZ BEDS, while her hairdresser and makeup team were most likely hanging out in the back of the plane. Flight attendants reported that “Beyoncé’s really nice” but “not as tall as you think she is.” (Yeah, you already knew that.)

OpenSkies is known for its spectacular French gourmet meals (in spite of its affiliation with British Airways) but most suspect that 28-year old Beyoncé chose the airline for its signature color, which is vivid lavender (expressed inside the airplane’s lush interiors.)

So there it is. For all you Beyoncé fans who wonder how the Queen Bee travels from one sweaty stage to the next, that’s it.

Gadling’s Travel Tunes – episode 7

If the temperature is any kind of indication, I’d say summer arrived early this year. And for me, summer is when I refresh my playlist to a more upbeat assortment of music. In today’s episode of Travel Tunes you’ll find a bit of everything – from The Pretty Reckless, all the way to the soothing tunes of Katie Melua.

Hopefully you’ve got some travel coming up, but if not, grab a cold drink and find yourself a spot in the sun and relax to these tunes. And yes – if you find this selection to suck, please feel free to leave your own top ten in the comments! Enjoy the long weekend!

Gadling’s Friday Travel Tunes – Episode 6

I’ve recently found myself in the midst of quite a few road trips, and nothing helps the miles go by like fantastic tunes. And beautiful scenery, of course. This week, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite jams to keep humming in the background while cruising around America’s finest scenic byways, and it just so happens that every single one of them relates directly to travel. Some might say a travel writer gravitates towards tunes such as these, but we’re chalking it up to a beautiful run-in with Ms. Serendipity.

Fire this up on your Android smartphone the next time you’re out and about on the open road, and see if any of these lyrics stir your soul, strike your fancy or just take you back. Wherever back may be. Just about everywhere is covered here, to multiple boroughs of New York City, to the fine lines of North Carolina, to the wild freeways of Germany, to the sweet tea-servin’ shacks of Georgia, to the ever-changing landscapes of California. And with that, we’ll see you on the pavement!
