Photo of the Day (4.4.09)

After being away from home for a month, you could say this photo is a sight for sore eyes. Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved my time in Cuba: the beaches are pristine and the water is crystal blue and clear. But something about the beaches of Hawaii (and in this case Maui) are so special and identifiable.

This photo, which comes to us from superdisco, does a great job capturing the tranquility of Maui’s moon-shaped Molokini island, the romance of Hawaiian sunsets, and the awesome silhouette of a lone (and leafless!) tree.

I just can’t resist a good tilt shift photo, and Foraggio Fotographic’s is no exception. On my temporary hiatus from normal Gadling duties, this week I’m wandering through New Zealand, and today finds me in the great North Island city of Wellington.

A relatively small city of only 400,000, Wellington is popular among toursits and locals alike for it’s compact, quaint downtown, solid nightlife, excellent food and ease of transportation. Cable cars like this one, for example move through the city and offer excellent views of the Cook Strait.

Talk about a gorgeous night skyline. The red hues of Skye Bar at the Hotel Unique in Sao Paulo are set perfectly against the looming gray urban night. There’s something very alive about this photo, from the reflection of red lights in the pool to friends lingering under glowing umbrellas.

Our Photo of the Day comes to us from wesleyrosenblum, who has some pretty awesome shots of sites all over South America.

I watched “No Country for Old Men” for the first time last week, and I guess it’s still on the brain. Having spent my childhood in Texas, I have some great memories of the expansive countryside. This photo in particular is of Big Bend National Park, which is where my family drove through when I was young. In our cream colored Volvo, would would dip and bend along the road and, when we’d spot the “DIP” signs, we’d cry out in unison, “Dip dip dip dip dip” as if we were on a roller coaster.

Indeed, there is something haunting and inspiring about the Sierra del Carmen of Mexico, the huge mountain range that looms in the distance.

The even more ironic part of my photo selection is that I’ve spent a full week with two very serious birdwatchers and today’s photo comes to us from sngcanary, who is also an avid birdwatcher who hails from San Antonio.

What better topic for March 17th’s photo of the day than Ireland, the home of St. Patrick’s Day and the source of many an alcoholic’s happiness on this sacred day of the year?

This shot was taken by colmdc outside of Trim Castle, the largest Norman Castle in Europe. It’s a wonderful green shot, and reminds me of all of my good times in the Emerald Isle.
