Photo of the day 1.19.10

You just never know what you’ll see in New York City. This picture, taken by ncarling, is a great shot of old-meets-new as the cabs whiz by the steeds in the street. Looks like it was a slow day in the city, but great job ncarling for grabbing the shot before being trampled by various forms of transportation.

If you’ve got some great travel shots you’d love to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day (01.16.10)

No, this isn’t a photo that a young Don Quixote brought to school for show and tell. It’s a bucolic scene on Russia’s Kizhi island captured by Flickr user kellinasf. While I wouldn’t want to be the gentleman charged with manning this windmill (are windmills manned?), I’d love to spend an afternoon laying in that field, staring at the clouds and doodling in a journal.

Kizhi is known for its wooden churches, chapels and houses. The structures are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site which draws thousands of tourists every year. But, for my money, a day in this meadow listening to the wind rustle the leaves of that tree and the creaking of the wooden windmill would be the only way I’d want to enjoy a visit to Kizhi. Call me simple, but that’s all I would need. Well, if someone packed me an eight-foot party sub for the afternoon, I wouldn’t complain about that either.

Puffins always amaze me. They appear so exotic and tropical, yet they reside in such frigid places as Iceland, Russia and Greenland. This little guy posed for Fiickr user The.Rohit in the tiny Icelandic village of Borgarfjörður Eystr (attempts to pronounce that name by those not skilled in Icelandic may result in tongue injuries). The photo shows off the diversity of Iceland, which, despite its name, is home to these gorgeous birds and some absolutely fantastic Spring and Summer weather.

What the photo does not convey is how wonderfully delicious puffins can be. They eat them in Iceland. I know this firsthand. Did I just ruin this picture for you?

Have a picture of a delicious animal (or anything else from your travels, for that matter)? Submit your images to Gadling’s Flickr group right now and we might use it for a future Photo of the Day.

Photo of the Day (1.5.10)

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from contributor muddynights. The natural light, composition, and layering in the photo are well captured, which really puts the proximity of the mountains and sea in perspective.

The photo was shot on the Sinai Peninsula – the official land bridge between Africa and Asia – which lies atop the Red Sea. Over the past 30 years, the Sinai has become a tourist destination due to its natural setting, rich coral reefs, and biblical history.

So where do you want to go in 2010? Tell us with a comment below! And if you have any travel shots you’ve been hanging on to from 2009 – put them in our Gadling Flickr Pool – it could be our next Photo of the Day…

Photo of the Day (12-30-09)

With the end of 2009 approaching, this photo by tammystaats seems perfect. Are we walking towards or away from something or someone? Isn’t the traveler’s answer that we are doing both?

I love the footprints of these four people. Even though they started out further away from each other, they look as if they are merging the more that this group walks into the distance. The blue sky, white clouds and the crests of these dunes offer the suggestion of infinite possibilty. Bravo!

If you have a shot that captures the infinite possibility of the traveler, send it our way at Gadling’s Flickr photo pool. It might be chosen as a Photo of the Day.

*This photo was tagged Colorado, so I am assuming these are at the Great Sand Dunes National Park.
