Photo of the Day (12.26.2009)

Mele (day after) Kalikimaka, everyone! I could be predictable and post a Christmas-themed photo for the day, but I happened upon a nice shot from fellow Gadling blogger Aaron Hotfelder and just had to commend him for this glorious shot of cowboys in Aruba. Horseback riding in the Caribbean is one of the last things I would think to do, and such large cacti are the last things I would expect to see, too, but that’s the joy of travel, don’t you think? It’s wonderful unpredictability.

If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

Photo of the Day (12/23/09)

When I saw this photo last week while looking for Santas from around the world, I knew I’d found today’s Photo of the Day. Although this fellow appears among the other Santas, here he is again– center stage.

The cultural mix of this Santa shot is superb. Taken by Carpetblogger in Azerbaijan, this is an excellent look at how elements of culture travel. As Carpetblogger explains, although the country is predominately Muslim, some aspects of secular Christian culture are celebrated. Santa is one of those boundary crossers.

If you have an interesting shot of cultural boundary crossing, send it our way at Gadling’s Flickr Photo Pool. It could be chosen as Photo of the Day.

Despite the recent news from Dubai stating its property and building crisis, the city is alive and well, and visitors like our faithful photographer jrodmanjr continue to have inspiring shots to offer us — like this one. Only in the Middle East can you snap a sunset like this one. That round, glowing sun lowering on the horizon must have been a sight to behold.

The dawn of a new decade is just weeks away, and while the sun will set on the beginning ten years of this millennium, there are plenty of beautiful things to look forward to.

If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

Photo of the Day (12.15.09)

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from Flickr user Buck Forester – shot from a kayak in Mono Lake, California. The picture was shot (drumroll please) on film using a Canon Elan 7 and Fuji Velvia 50 stock. The photographer “had a 2 mile open water paddle back to shore and got caught in some high winds” along the way…which suddenly makes me think that I need to get out from behind this computer and go have an adventure.

Mono Lake is an alkaline and hypersaline lake believed to have formed at least 760,000 years ago.

If you’re inclined to get out from behind your computer and go have an adventure – bring your camera and submit it to Gadling’s Flickr Photo Pool! We might just feature it as our Photo of the Day…

Riding a ferry anywhere in the world is simply one of the most pleasant experiences in the world, and this photo pretty much sums up why. This particular ferry is the 4:20 to Bremerton on the Puget Sound. The water is as still as glass, and the sky a glowing orange. There’s such peace, such tranquility, in this shot. Walt Whitman’s “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” is one of my favorite poems, and in it he writes, “Others will enter the gates of the ferry, and cross from shore to shore.” The ferry is a perfect metaphor for the common experience of life itself. How beautiful that metaphor — and life — is.

Today’s photo comes to us from Andy Bokanev, a Seattle native with an amazing array of travel photography. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!
