Photo of the Day (12-9-09)

This photo titled “Peace” by jrodmanjr, the fellow who took it, is a lovely depiction of an alley away from the hubbub of a city. As he noted, time away from the souks in Dubai, the city with the tallest building in the world, was well needed.

In the comment section, he also gives details about why he framed the shot the way that he did. If he had moved the camera to the right, “the bright clutter, crates, and trinkets ended up to be too much of a distraction. “

As it is, we become the witness to the life of a man who reads in quiet repose.

If you have captured a quiet moment of repose, or any other sort of moment, send it our way at Gadling’s Flickr photo pool, It might be chosen as a Photo of the Day

This is a typical sight on the Pacific coast — one that brings back lovely memories of breezy coastal strolls. I love the balance in this photo, the contrasts of color, and the curved lines throughout. The kelp that gathers into a nest and spreads its thick reeds toward the viewer is a perfect focal point as well.

Today’s photo comes to us from Bryn Tassell, who has an amazing array of natural shots from all over the world. This one was taken during the calm after a series of storms in Victoria, Canada.

If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!

There’s a quality about this photo by ohad* that gives me a looking in a snow globe, cozy feeling–a holding the world in the palm of a hand kind of feeling. The utter stillness of this scene, and the clarity of the mountains and the trees as they are reflected in the Merced River evoke a sense of peace. The sepia tone suggests nostalgia–as if to conjure naturalist John Muir to Yosemite once more. Lovely.

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from Milwaukee based Flickr user koalaeatingtree. Taking great landscape shots is one thing, but capturing a perfectly timed moment in a beautiful location like this is remarkable.

The photo was taken in Naples, Florida – a city voted in 2009 as “one of the 10 pricey cities worth its high cost” by U.S News & World Report. For the techies out there, koalaeatingtree was able to capture the shot with a 30 second exposure on a 16mm lens.

Get out there! Chase storms, track down interesting people, and submit them to our Gadling Flickr Pool – we might just select it as our Photo of the Day!

Photo of the Day (11.28.2009)

Yesterday, I passed by several businesses that were setting up their holiday lights and decorations. I chose this shot as a lovely reminder of the beauty of city lights no matter what time of year it is. There’s something about the haze of a big city in particular that makes for a great photograph. The light lingers in the air and makes the city vibrantly alive.

Today’s photo comes to us from toffiloff, who has some amazing high-def shots worth browsing of Holland, his home country, or other places like China or Switzerland. If you have some great travel shots you’d like to share, be sure to upload them to the Gadling pool on Flickr. We might just pick one as our Photo of the Day!
