Photo of the Day (6.23.09)

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from our very own Stephen Greenwood, our newest blogger and resident Hong Kong expert. He’ll be blogging from southeast asia for the next few months in his series Dim Sum Dialogues, absorbing the culture and taking us on a journey through the massive city state. In case you hadn’t figured, he’s a damn good photographer too.

Think you’ve got what it takes to submit to the Photo of the Day series? Add them to the Gadling Pool on Flickr and we might use it down the road. Make sure you save them under Creative Commons though, otherwise we can’t use them!

Love ’em or hate ’em, jellyfish are some of the most photogenic underwater creatures around. I’ve heard so many interesting tales about jellyfish that it’s no wonder we continue to be absolutely astounded by these transparent floaters. My friend once videotaped he and his friends swimming through a patch of jellyfish to an island off the coast of China, but when they came ashore they discovered the island was a high-security military base. They were forcefully interrogated, and the tape was destroyed.

While these creatures are a real treat to observe, as MadMurdoch shows us in this photo that was taken somewhere in Asia, they can actually be quite a nuisance for people in the water. Here in Hawaii, we experience potent box jellyfish outbreaks on the south shore a week after a full moon, which prevent swimmers from entering the water for a few days every month. On the east side, Portuguese man of war are so prevalent that peeing on your friend is a pretty common occurrence.

Still, the beauty of these jellyfish cannot be denied. I love how the bulbs of the jellyfish are bobbing every which direction as well as how clear the ocean is here.

One of the most beautiful sites in North Dakota in the summer time is the fields along the highway that are filled with yellow sunflowers. This shot by flicts reminds me of that–plus the warmth, energy and happiness of the season. The angle also turns this one flower into a kaleidoscope of nature.

If you’ve captured and image you’d like to share, add it to Gadling’s Flickr photo pool and it might be chosen as a Photo of the Day.

Today’s Photo of the Day is relevant for several reasons. The shot of the tarmac on the way to Paris was taken by Kent Wien, our resident pilot who is actually currently on layover in the middle of a BOS-CDG-BOS turn.

This week is also the week of the 45th Paris Air Show, the massive biannual event that brings thousands of suppliers, manufacturers and press to Le Bourget for updates on all of the new technology. It’s the biggest air show in the world, and both Kent and Grant will running around collecting data for Gadling. Stay tuned later this week for updates from the show.

Oh, and if you’ve got any cool photos that you’d like to share with the world, add them to the Gadling Pool on Flickr and it might be chosen as our Photo of the Day. Make sure you save them under Creative Commons though, otherwise we can’t use them!

I’m a sucker for the color orange. It’s long been my favorite color because it’s so fiery and bright but also because it’s doesn’t rhyme with any other word in the English language. That hue combined with my next two favorite colors, turquoise and brown, make me smile more than anything else.

Today’s photo comes to us from the Caffeinated Traveller and was taken in an art studio in China. There’s a cool symmetry to it, don’t you think? The round ceramic glass bowls, the angles of the paintbrushes, and the warm colors make a really fine image.
