Photo Of The Day: Kalalau Beach

Kalalau Beach – the name alone sounds like something that might bubble out of your mouth in an overheated tropical stupor.

Or maybe these are just the words of someone living in a rainy place.

Some context: two weekends ago, London was dreamily hot. As I reclined on a flannel sheet in Victoria Park in the afternoon shade, drinking a Pimm’s Cup and gazing at Londoners of all types and creeds, all deeply intoxicated by summer, it occurred to me that lazy, hot weekends are the point of life. All this all-weather hardiness is just for show. What we all long for is a perfect day outside under hot clear skies.

Not really, but I felt it then. And I remember it today, gazing out the window at rainy, cold (57 degrees!) London. This romantic image of Kalalau Beach on Kauai, shot at sunset by Flickr user Buck Forester, reminds me of how I felt that day.

Photo Of The Day: Venus And Jupiter At Sunset

This week, millions looked to the sky at sunset (or sunrise, depending on your location) to see the Transit of Venus. This now once-in-a-lifetime event – the last time Venus was visible crossing the sun’s path was 2004 – won’t happen again until 2117. Today’s Photo of the Day is from a more frequent event: sunset. Taken by Flickr user woofboy111 in Deltona, Florida, in November 2008, the planets Venus and Jupiter appear as specks over the setting sun. Even if you missed Venus’ voyage this week, you can still see several other planets visible after dusk this month.

We’d love to see your favorite sky photos in the Gadling Flickr pool to be featured as a future Photo of the Day.

Photo Of The Day: Biking In Cambodia

Today’s Photo Of The Day was taken by Luke Destefano, and depicts a cyclist at the water’s edge in Siem Riep, Cambodia. I love the way this photograph simultaneously captures a perfect silhouette (complete with a bike basket, a relaxed hand and flowing, long hair) and a background blurred by the mist rising from the water. Capturing the essence of biking in Cambodia, this photo is titled “take your time” on Flickr. Have you spent time in Cambodia? Do you have photos from your travels? If you’d like to share your images with us, upload your photos to the Gadling Flickr Pool.

Photo Of The Day: Street Art In Rome

Reserve your negative opinions about street art for a moment and consider this image of “Madonna and Child” spray-painted on the side of a who-knows-how-old building in Rome, Italy. Captured in the residential neighborhood of Trastevere by Flickr user AlexSven, the photo summarizes, at least for me, the living organism that is the Eternal City. The ancient and modern, the irreverent and the religious all co-exist in this magical city.

What’s more, the word “graffiti” is an Italian word meaning “illicit scribblings or drawings on the surface of a public place” and is a type of art and protest that has been in practice since the days of the Roman Empire. So this street artist (or vandal, depending on which side of the debate you are on) is continuing a tradition that has lasted thousands of years.

Photo Of The Day: ‘Rocky Road’

This Photo of the Day comes from Gadling Flickr pool member James Wheeler who captured the image in Vancouver, B.C., using a Nikon D5000. The image is titled “Rocky Road.”

James added this caption to the image: “Although there are a lot of sandy beaches in Vancouver, a lot of the shoreline around the city is covered in rocks that are exposed during low tide like in this photo.”
